Comparing Fractions • To compare fractions we can: • Find a least common denominator • Use Decimals • Use Percents
Today... • We will be learning how to compare fractions... • USING PERCENTS!
How do I find a fraction’s percent? STEP 1 • Start with your given fraction/fractions Example
Step 2 In your calculator, divide the numerator by the denominator Example
Step 3 This number is the decimal equivalent to the fraction Example
Step 4 Multiply the decimal by 100 and there is your percent! Example
Last but not least… • Compare the two percents, the bigger percent, is the bigger fraction Example
For example... • 3 4= 0.75 • 0.75 x 100= 75 or 75%
Inequality signs • Greater than: > • Less than: < • Equal to: = • Remember the open side of the sign, points to the bigger number • example: 10 > 4
What do I compare? • Find the decimal and percent for each fraction • Once you do this, see which percent is the biggest. • Place the <, >, or = sign between the fractions
Example: Which is greater 5/8 or 6/10? Back
Find the Decimal Equivalent • 5 ÷ 8= 0.625 • 6 ÷ 10 = 0.60 Back
Find the percent.. • 0.625 x 100= 62.5% • 0.6 x 100= 60% Back
so... • 62.5 % > 60% • SO: • \ Back
