Configuration Management for Mobile Applications at the Department of State • Current State • The Department of State(DOS) has an 11 year old enterprise configuration control board – the IT CCB • DoS currently uses Blackberries for communication with our Exchange Servers • Active community of social media users and developers
Configuration Management for Mobile Applications at the Department of State • Governance for Apple applets • Established a working group to develop a standard State presence for public Apple mobile applications • One State Apple store • One brand • SOPs were agreed upon by State’s Internet Steering committee
Configuration Management for Mobile Applications at the Department of State • Governance for BlackBerry applications • Established a Mobile Applications Council to represent technical as well as user community interests • More complicated because of security issues • Required security guidelines for Blackberry Exchange servers that will push down any applications
Configuration Management for Mobile Applications at the Department of State • IT CCB and Blackberry Apps • First application was Oratio to provide accessibility • Limited to one type of Blackberry • Went through long reviewer checklist from 18 organizations • Privacy • Training • Budget • Bandwidth • Desktop support and more
Configuration Management for Mobile Applications at the Department of State • Facebook was the second application due to popular demand • This application also went through the full IT CCB review process. • Parallel to this the council was working on a smaller number of reviewers and a shorter checklist to reflect a particular type of application and help speed up process.
Configuration Management for Mobile Applications at the Department of State • Lessons Learned so far • Hard to convince some review authorities to reduce questions or to not be reviewers • Process will work faster once it is automated using our IT CCB system is using Metastorm
Configuration Management for Mobile Applications at the Department of State • New BlackBerry Screen Reader Change Request was manually sent to reviewers on Oct. 10 using shortened checklist. • The rest of the process is same as for all of our enterprise changes and we hope to have it approved within 2 weeks • 5 working days for review • 5 working days for vote
