Journey 1 What do you know about the Sun and the Inner Planets?
The Sun • The Sun is the largest object in the Solar System. • Even though it looks like a planet, the Sun is a star. • Planets revolve around the Sun. • The gases make the Sun look like a big ball of fire and it is what heats the Earth. • It is made up of gases like helium. This type of gas is what fills this little girl’s balloons.
Mercury • Mercury is the 1st planet closest to the Sun. • It is similar looking to Earth’s moon. • This planet is made of rocks. • Mercury spins slowly.
Venus • Venus is the 2nd planet away from the Sun. • This is the brightest planet in the Solar System. • It is the only planet that spins backwards. • Venus is also known as Earth’s “Sister Planet” because they are so much alike. • Venus is also made of rocks.
Earth • Earth is the 3rd planet from the Sun. • This planet spins quickly. • Earth is the only planet that has water and that is why it is nicknamed the “Water Planet”. • Plants, animals, and humans are able to live on Earth because of water. • Our planet has one moon.
Mars • Mars is the 4th planet from the Sun. • It is known as the “Red Planet”. • The surface of Mars is rocky and sandy. • Mars spins very quickly compared to the other planets. • This planet has two moons named Phobos and Deimos.

Jupiter • Jupiter is the 5th planet from the Sun. • It is the largest planet in the Solar System. • The planet has a large spot that scientists call the “Red Spot”. • Jupiter has rings.
Saturn • Saturn is the 6th planet away from the Sun in the Solar System. • It is the 2nd largest planet. • The planet is mostly yellow with blue patches. • Saturn has weather and storms just like Earth. • Galileo discovered that Saturn has rings.
Uranus • Uranus is the 7th planet away from the Sun. • This planet has 20 moons! • Its rings are very thin. • Uranus is the only planet to spin on its side. • Since it is so cold, the planet is made of ice.
Neptune • Neptune is the 8th planet away from the Sun. • It is blue because of how cold it is on the planet. • Like Jupiter, Neptune also has a spot called the “Great Dark Spot”.
Pluto • Pluto use to be the 9th planet and the last planet. • Due to its small size, it is called a “Dwarf Planet”. • Many scientists believe that it does not orbit the Sun like the other planets. • Since Pluto is the furthest object away from the Sun, it is very cold.
