4. The Problem The allotted time for students to eat lunch, use the restroom, engage in social activity, etc. is not too short.

5. Solutions: • Thoroughly researched • Highly recommended • Well thought out

6. Hall Sweeps Although hall sweeps prove to be an effective way to get students to class, post lunch hall sweeps can complicate things. • Students who walk to lunch are much more likely to receive a ticket even if they leave as soon as lunch starts • Most students will choose to skip out on class in order to avoid getting a ticket that will build up in fines

7. Solution One: Refraining from Post Lunch Hall Sweeps • Half of the students surveyed say that they are frequently late to class post-lunch period due to long lines and traffic at the intersections around and surrounding the schools.

8. Cafeteria Food Quality When surveyed a surprising 95% of students claimed to dislike the quality of the food in the cafeteria. • Students resort to eating out at a fast food restaurant when they are not offered enjoyable alternatives.

9. Solution Two: Improve the quality of food in the cafeteria http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuK1ev36R00&safe=active • Unless a student is one of the first out of class, they are forced to wait in line for half of the allotted time to receive a lunch they more likely than not do not enjoy.

Lack of Time Not only do students feel rushed and are expected to complete various tasks (eating, social hour, restroom, etc.) during lunch; but parents are being affected during their lunch hour as well. “My mom will check me out before lunch, and check me back in after lunch so I won’t be late, but I still miss class.” -Blair Smith

11. Solution Three: Extended Lunch Hour • One lunch, for 30 minutes is an unjust ratio to 6 hours and 40 minutes every day for five days including late start and the .75 hours a week to get to and from class

Plan of Action: Solution One Hall sweeps are an effective method of getting students to class, but as previously discussed when implemented after lunch students tend to simply leave when they know they are going to get caught in a hall sweep. If we remove hall sweeps from after lunches students would be less likely to leave and not go to class at all rather than simply show up late.

13. Plan of Action: Solution Two We propose that there be a change in lunch room décor. • Open more lines • Improve the quality of the food. We understand that this may be impractical due to budget cuts, but if this solution were used students would get food they enjoy and wouldn’t be late to class as often

14. Plan of Action: Solution Three We have found that extending the lunch hour by even ten minutes would be the most effective method of solving this problem. With more time to socialize and eat, students wouldn’t feel so over whelmed by the free time-class time ratio, students would be more likely to choose healthier places to eat.

15. Plan of Action: Solution Three Cont. Extending the lunch hour seems impractical, but even adding ten minutes to lunch would put us out of school at 2:20 and wouldn’t interfere with the curriculum.

Conclusion Reviewing some of the points we have made throughout our presentation. • There is a problem with the amount of time allotted for lunch • Students would like to be on time, and no longer feel rushed • A solution can be found through the following: • Refraining from post-lunch hour Hall-sweeps • Improve the quality of the food in the cafeteria • Extend the allotted time for lunch • Extended lunch periods would prevent student stress about time and make student life here at Taylorsville more enjoyable.
