All of us have mental health and, like our bodies, our minds can become unwell. In many ways, mental health is just like physical health: everybody has it and we need to take care of it. Good mental health means being generally able to think, feel and react in the ways that you need and want to live your life. But if you go through a period of poor mental health you might find the ways you're frequently thinking, feeling or reacting become difficult, or even impossible, to cope with. This can feel just as bad as a physical illness, or even worse. Mental Health
Dwayne Johnson • "I found that, with depression, one of the most important things you could realize is that you're not alone. You're not the first to go through it; you're not going to be the last to go through it. And oftentimes—it happens—you just feel like you're alone. You feel like it's only you. You're in your bubble. And I wish I had someone at that time who could just pull me aside and [say], 'Hey, it's gonna be OK. It'll be OK.' So, I wish I knew that."
Demi Lovato • “I think it's important that people no longer look at mental illness as something taboo to talk about, It's something that's extremely common, one in five adults has a mental illness, so basically everyone is essentially connected to this problem and this epidemic. The problem with mental illness is people don't look at it as a physical illness. When you think about it, the brain is actually the most complex organ in your body. We need to treat it like a physical illness and take it seriously."
Adele • "I can slip in and out of [depression] quite easily, I had really bad postpartum depression after I had my son, and it frightened me," she said. "I didn't talk to anyone about it. I was very reluctant...Four of my friends felt the same way I did, and everyone was too embarrassed to talk about it."
Time to Change is a nationwide movement to get people talking about mental health. No one should feel ashamed about having a mental health problem, they wouldn’t if they had a broken leg. Supporting someone with a mental health problem, is just like supporting someone with a broken leg, it can make a big difference to how they feel. And it’s really easy! Time to Change campaigners have produced an animation to give us some examples of the small things which can make a big difference. Time to Change
A big difference “When I was hospitalised with depression my friends gave me envelopes to open each day containing jokes, photos and/or chocolate. I'm so grateful because it made me feel loved despite feeling so awful.” Deborah “As someone who struggles with my body image, a good listener makes me feel heard. Makes me feel like I do indeed matter and I'm more than my appearance.” Peter “I love it when people show they are thinking of me by sending me messages via SMS or facebook. A hug or a tap on the shoulder it all helps.” Ed
