A guide by PGDM College in Hyderabad “No great manager or leader ever fell from heaven, it’s learned not inherited.” ― Tom Northup Everyone moves up the career ladder sooner or later. Some opts for a sound management course whereas some wade the water without getting into any PGDM college as such. But what makes these courses important is helping in a smooth transition of what can otherwise turn into a total chaos. PGDM in Hyderabad has helped many people with the necessary skills to become a successful leader in life. After all, gone are the days when people are either born leaders or they are not. Leadership is a sensitive skill which can be learned by anyone..
Today I am laying down 5 tips to make the transition to become a Manager smoother and easier: 1. Do a personal SWOT analysis - The foremost thing that happens when you become a manager is that your team is dependent on you for their career. In order to lead a team, you must be well aware of your strengths and weaknesses. Do a thorough SWOT analysis and list down what needs to be improved rather than waiting for a feedback from your team at the end of the year. 2. A big no to technical work - As tempting as the technical work sounds to you, you have to resist from it no matter what. This is the work you are most comfortable at doing, but this is your team’s responsibility now. This doesn’t mean you should refrain from pitching wherever required but on daily basis is a big no.
3. Find a Mentor –It is always good to have sound guidance from an experienced professional. Look for people in your organisation who have gone through a similar kind of transition as you have. He/She could always give you advice in terms of challenges faced and lessons learnt. As part of the same organisation, some procedures remain the same across all the sectors, so it is better to have a go to person whenever you feel stuck somewhere rather than figuring out all by yourself right from day one. 4. One on One meetings with all team members - This is important. Meet all your team members personally and make an effort to know their interests and strong areas. Make thorough notes of their expectations from you. This would help you better access the distribution of roles among the team. Remember a happy team is a successful team.
5. Keep learning new skills - Becoming a manager does not mean there is no room for improvement left or there is no need for you to learn new skill. Learn new type of management skills but doing everything all at once could be a bit overwhelming so i would encourage you to pick one thing at a time, learn the skill well and then move on to the next one.
