Survey Says: Green Means Go! Modernizing Traffic Signal Inspections with Survey123 Kim Baillieul GIS Analyst City of Columbus Andy Volenik Traffic Operations Manager City of Columbus Ohio GIS Conference September 23 – 25, 2019 Hyatt Regency Columbus Columbus, Ohio
Survey Says: Green Means Go! • Overview • Development • Delivering Results • Lessons Learned • Future Development
DPS Traffic performs over 250 inspections annually Legacy process 14 page paper form Performed by two groups, Line & Electronic Subjective grading & lack of photos Paper copy scanned into Lucity (asset management system) Historical Inspection Methods
Split form into two – Line & Electronics Allows the two teams to operate independently on their own time Using XLSForm to add advanced settings Auto-scoring to remove subjectivity Required photos & questions Additional detail captured for asset management Only see applicable questions Easy user interface catered to field staff with tablets Signalized Intersection Inspections – Survey123
Delivering Results – Custom Notes Notes pop up when a signal meets criteria for a refurbishment (top) or when a ground reading for any specific pole is too high (bottom). • Request for pop-up notes when specific parts of inspection were poor, even if overall score is decent
Created dashboard combining both sets of inspection results Snapshot for management in both inspection progress and asset health Delivering Results – Operations Dashboard
Currently building an analytics map to identify trends and patterns at a neighborhood/regional level Delivering Results – AGO/Arcade Map and Beyond
Lessons Learned – Technical Items Ongoing Progress Notes Be mindful of field length Make use of ‘null’ field Limitations with Survey123 Nested repeats Report formats Publishing & Schema design Set up testing procedures Research your errors Read the Esri documentation!
Lessons Learned – Procedural Items Set Feedback Deadlines Version your work – easy to hide as an attribute Survey interface changes Scoring system changes Reporting changes Have boundaries & expectations of your role (make people talk to each other!) Look holistically at the process
Future Development Plans - Asset Management Working to extract attribution from assets in inspection and put them into features collected via high-accuracy GPS +
