  1. CHEMICAL REACTIONSCHAPTER 7.1 BY JOSH AND JUSTIN

  2. CHEMICAL REACTIONS Chemical reaction- The ways in which atoms are joined together is changed.

  3. 5 types Single replacement Double replacement Combustion Decomposition Combination

  4. Components of a Chemical Reaction • When writing a chemical equation, the reactants go on the left, with an arrow(s) leading to the product(s). • Reactants  Products • Example: A + B  AB

  5. EXAMPLE Iron + Oxygen  Iron (III) oxide (rust)

  6. QUESTION Salt is formed by the reaction of sodium and chlorine. Write the chemical equation with correct formulas. A) NaCl Na+Cl2 B) Na+Cl2 NaCl C) Na+Cl2 Na+Cl2

  7. JOHN DALTON’S ATOMIC THEORY 1) All matter is made of atoms. Atoms are indivisible and indestructible. 2) All atoms of a given element are identical in mass and properties 3) Compounds are formed by a combination of two or more different kinds of atoms. 4) A chemical reaction is a rearrangement of atoms. http://www.iun.edu/~cpanhd/C101webnotes/composition/dalton.html

  8. QUESTION Sodium hydrogen bicarbonate (baking soda) is heated, it decomposes, forming sodium carbonate, carbon dioxide, and water. Write the correct word equation. A) Sodium bicarbonate sodium carbonate + carbon dioxide + water B) Sodium bicarbonate + sodium carbonate  carbon dioxide + water C) Carbon dioxide + sodium carbonate  sodium bicarbonate + water

  9. 1) What was John Dalton’s Theory? 2) Give 2 examples of a chemical reaction. HOMEWORK

  10. Mr. Sweeten’s First “Chemical Reaction”
