  1. Cell Growth Chapter 10-1

  2. Cell Growth • Limits to Cell Growth • Demands on cell’s DNA becomes too much for cells and they get bigger. • Demands on movement of nutrients and waste across the cell membrane as it gets bigger.

  3. Cell Growth • The cell makes a copy of DNA when it replicates and creates a new cell. • Cells do not make extra copies of DNA as they get larger.

  4. Cell Growth • The volume of the cell, determines the rate of the consumption and chemical waste production in the cell.

  5. Cell Growth • Divide the cells surface area by the volume to get the ratio of • Surface area : Volume • Surface Area / Volume

  6. Cell Growth • What is the ratio for a cell with a surface area of 6 cubic centimeters and volume of 1 cubic centimeter. • 6/1 or 6 :1

  7. Cell Growth • A cells volume will increase more rapidly than its surface area.

  8. Cell Growth • The cells ratio decreases as the cell’s volume increases more rapidly than the surface area.

  9. Division of the Cell • Cell Division - is the process when a cell divides into two new daughter cells.

  10. Division of the Cell • The problem with increased volume of the cell is solved by the division of the cell. • The cell’s volume is reduced when it is divided.
