What are they? • Forces that exist between molecules!!
They exist in… • Mainly solids and liquids • Do not exist in gases b/c their molecules are too far apart … so no attractive forces is needed!
Dipole/Dipole • Forces of attraction that exist between POLAR molecules!! • Have higher m.p./b.p. than nonpolar molecules! • Polarity depends on the orientation of the molecule (lewis structure)!!
HYDROGEN BONDS • Strongest type of IMF • Occurs only b/w H and a small, highly electronegative atom such as N, O, or F • Has the highest mp/bp of all 3!!
LONDON (dispersion)Forces • Occurs mainly in NONPOLAR molecules! • It is the WEAKEST force of all 3! • Has the lowest mp/bp of all 3!! • Forms temporary, instantaneous dipoles!
