  2. King George Island

  3. King George Island • several nations operate permanent bases • important hub to Antarctic Peninsula • focal point of scientific activities • shipborne / airborne tourism • protected areas • complex context but apparent need for co-ordinated management(SCAR recommendations Tokyo 2000)

  4. Goal of the KGIS project • To produce an integrated geographic database • for use by all countries • for use in multi-disciplinary applications: • planning and coordination of activities • environmental impact assessments • scientific database • management plans (SSSIs, ASMA)

  5. Workflow final products web inter-face raw data Integration & meta data generation standards communication & outreach

  6. Work carried out • data integration and metadata generation (FGDC/XML and on the Antarctic Master Directory/DIF) - FH Karlsruhe, Germany- IAA Buenos Aires, Argentina- IAAG Muenchen, Germany- IGIK Warszawa, Poland- INACH/IGM Santiago, Chile- IPG Freiburg, Germany- KORDI Seoul, South Korea- LaPAG/UFRGS Porto Alegre, Brazil- SGM/IAU Montevideo, Uruguay- ...

  7. Work carried out • data integration • website- project information, user registration, data download - input from BAS on disclaimer and terms of use- data downloadonline after the meeting http://www.ipg.uni-freiburg.de/forschung/ap3/kgis

  8. Work carried out • data integration • website • promotion: A key component in the success of the project- King George Island stations 2001 - CoMNAP 2001 - ... the logistic support provided by INACH to visit King George Island is greatly acknowledged

  9. Work carried out • data integration • website • promotion • testbed for SCAR spatial standards development- input to feature type catalogue development- joint work with AAD June/July 2002 ?

  11. Activities SCAR XVI and current status • Develop a specification (including the SCAR Spatial Data Model) • Obtain geographic data from members • Integrate the geographic data and standard products • Produce a user manual for the database including all metadata • Provide on-line access and user registration facility • Develop a specification (including the SCAR Spatial Data Model) • Obtain geographic data from members • Integrate the geographic data and standard products • Produce a user manual for the database including all metadata • Provide on-line access and user registration facility status 2001 status 2002

  12. Suggested work plan • continue obtaining and integrating data, maintain database and website • continue promoting KGIS among users / data producers: - attend 3rd Scientific Coordinators Meeting on KGI- liase with CEP and CoMNAP • maintain close links to related GIS projects on KGI • testbed for SCAR spatial data standards /contribute to further development (FTC, metadata / data quality) • link data into Cybercartographic Atlas • pilot project on SCAR gazetteer´s coordinates ?

  13. SCAR Gazetteer and KGIS • ca. 800 named features on KGI in SCAR Gazetteer • ca. 300 named by more than on country

  14. Torre La, pico La Tour, cerro Tower, The Tower, The 2.5 km SCAR Gazetteer and KGIS • differences in co-ordinates- different / unknown datums- imprecise co-ordinates- errors • implications on management, SAR, etc. • use common reference to adjust ? Source: Management Plan SSSI 8
