POLLUTION AS AN IMPACT OF SOCIAL AND LIVELIHOOD PRESENTED BY L.D. MABASO
SCHOOL PROFILE Ottawa Primary School serves learners from the impoverish areas of Amaoti, Zwelisha and Amaotana which are in formal settlements. Their source of water in the community is a communal tap that serves more than 200 households. The condition in and around the school is very unhygienic the place is filthy
Objectives To highlight the sources of water pollution in informal settlements To teach learners and the community about the possible dangers of water contaminated to health To teach learners about the dangers of Land pollution
Investigation In our school it was found that most learners were suffering from diarrhoea and skin related condition. We conducted an investigation to determine the cause. During our investigation it was found that at home our learners use water from a communal tap.
CLEANING CAMPAIGN Grade 4 were cleaning near the school, the sport is used as a dumping site by the community.
Challenges Water from the communal tap is collected using buckets or containers, which are not always clean and not covered to protect the water from being polluted. From the tap there are many possibilities of water being contaminated e.g. coming into contact with a dirty bucket or container, hands, dust etc
Challenges-Continued Communal taps are not protected any one even animals can come into contact with the tap and be a source of contamination. If water is contaminated it can easily spread bacteria or any other organism to a number of people in a very short space of time. A filthy place can easily spread diseases to an unhealthy community.
SOLUTIONS • We started a health education programme where learners are educated about the hygienic handling of water including the following: • The cleaning of buckets or containers used to collect water. • Prevention of bodily contact with clean drinking water.

Learners were addressed about Pollution that threatens our lives
Grade-R washing hands Washing of hands before touching food Because water borne diseases are associated with poverty we also encouraged or taught our learners to start vegetable gardens at school.
RECOMMENDATIONS We would like to involve all members of the community in the project to ensure that the message is spread to all. We also want to include the local leaders councillors and religious leaders We would also like to involve Government Departments such as Water affairs and Forestry and Environmental
School benefit Learners collect water from the nearby stream to use it for watering school gardens.
CONCLUSIONS After this project a significant decrease in diarrhoea related sicknesses was observed. Absenteeism by our learners has been reduced
