  1. Parent's Guide Elementary Report Cards Educational Services Department November, 2003

  2. The Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board computerized Report Card is used in all cycles at the elementary level. The report card covers a two-year cycle. There are four reporting periods per year for a total of 8 reporting periods per cycle.

  3. Progress during the cycle On the first seven (7) reports of the cycle your child’s development and progress in acquiring competencies will be communicated to you using the following legend: A very satisfactorily B satisfactorily C with a few difficulties D with great difficulty NR not reported Special Note: NR is used exceptionally when a report is not appropriate in the child’s learning cycle e.g. if a child has just entered the program, if a child has had a lengthy absence due to illness, if a teacher has indicated that evaluation of this competency will be carried out at different intervals

  4. Effort At each reporting period your child’s overall effort is evaluated in each subject area. The legend used is: H highly satisfactory S satisfactory I improvement needed

  5. The end of cycle evaluation is based on age appropriate criteria established in the QEP. The following legend is used: 1. Exceeds the end of cycle outcomes Your child demonstrates the competency easily and in many situations exceeds the age appropriate expectations. 2.Has attained the end of cycle outcomes Your child demonstrates the competency in the classroom at an age appropriate level. 3.Has partially attained the end of cycle outcomes Your child demonstrates some, but not all, of the competency expectations. Help will be needed to attain the required level of competency. 4.Has not attained the end of cycle outcomes Your child is still in the early stages of developing this competency. A great deal of help will be needed to attain the required level of competency. End of Cycle Evaluation

  6. Finding your way around the report card • At the bottom of the first page, there are rectangular boxes dealing with your child’s attendance and any additional information that may be included with the report card

  7. Cross Curricular Competencies The evaluation reported under Cross Curricular competencies shows your child’s development in those areas which are common to all subjects, indicating how your child functions as a learner. These cross curricular competencies are divided into four main areas as follows: Intellectual Methodological Personal and social Communication-related

  8. In the QEP, competencies have been identified for each subject. For each of these subjects, teacher(s) report on your child’s learning in three ways: • Teachers’ Comments • Progress in the development of the competencies • Effort

  9. Teachers’ Comments These messages are used by the teachers to communicate with you about your child’s learning and address the following: • Context Explains what your child is learning or describes the thematic units/projects that have been used this reporting period. • Observations Explains what they have observed about how your child learns as well as the effort and motivation demonstrated. • Recommendations Suggestions of how you might help your child.

  10. Subject – Specific Competencies For each subject, there are specific competencies that have been identified and developed. Your child’s progress in the development of these competencies is evaluated by the teacher(s).

  11. Effort Your child’s overall effort is evaluated in each subject and is indicated on the last line of the subject section.

  12. Within the QEP, the child is at the centre of his/her own learning. Key features of this approach are: • Reflection, • Self-evaluation, • Goal setting. The report card is accompanied by a Student Self-Evaluation Sheet. This is where your child reflects on his/her learning and sets goals for the next term.

  13. Cycle 1 Example Cycle 2 & 3 Example

  14. Parent Comment Section Parents are asked to : • provide comments and observations about their child’s progress, special interests and activities. • sign this sheet acknowledging that they have received and reviewed their child’s report card. This is the only sheet to be returned to the school.
