  2. Scenarios for a Comprehensive External Evaluation of UNESCO • 182 EX/24 set out three scenarios: • Scenario 1: Focused approach on external factors • Scenario 2: Focused coverage of external and certain internal factors • Scenario 3: Broad coverage

  3. Scenario chosen • The Executive Board and General Conference opted for an evaluation of external factors • Key Evaluation Question: • “How should UNESCO position itself to address the challenges of the 21st century and make the most of prospective opportunities?”

  4. 35 General Conference Resolution 102 • “Decides on an external and independent evaluation of UNESCO of a comprehensive, strategic and forward-looking character…on the understanding that the Secretariat will only provide factual information to the External Evaluation Team…

  5. 35 General Conference Resolution 102 • …Requests the Director-General ……. to cover half of the expenses for this evaluation and invites Member States to match this amount through voluntary contributions…” • So far, contributions received from Burkina Faso, Estonia, Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, United Kingdom • Contributions can be made up to June 30, 2010.

  6. Key Dates • 2 November 2009: Open international call for proposals released • 17 December 2009: UNESCO Contracts Committee approved the selection • 23 December 2009: Contract awarded
