This lesson aims to help students understand how the Nazis were able to rapidly take over multiple countries in Europe through the use of the Blitzkrieg method. Students will learn key vocabulary, identify countries conquered by the Nazis, and discuss the reasons for their success through a Think Pair Share activity.

Success Criteria • I will be able to list at least 3 countries conquered by the Nazis • I will discuss the ‘Blitzkrieg’ method with my group and explain how the Nazis were able to take over so many countries with a ‘Think Pair Share’ activity.
Once Hitler ran Germany he wanted to make Germany the biggest and most powerful country in the World • He would do this by taking over countries around Germany • Once he had conquered Europe, he planned to target countries in the rest of the world.
Chose 3 countries that were occupied by the Nazis by 1942 and write them in your jotter.
Why were the Nazis so successful in taking over countries?Think…Pair…Share! Think...You have one minute to think of ways that the Nazis were able to invade other countries. Make a list in your jotter. Pair...Share your thoughts with your partner and write down any ideas you don’t have. Share... Share your ideas with the rest of the class.

3 Stages of ‘Blitzkrieg’ The Nazis were able to invade countries very quickly with the use of the ‘blitzkrieg’ (lightning war) method. Stage 2 Army move in using tanks and armoured cars – could break through lines quickly. Stage 1 German air force attack airfields and communication targets – power lines, bridges, railways etc. Stage 3 Infantry soldiers sent in to “mop up.”
