One day the Treasurer – the ghost of the mine – decided to have a closer look at the miners’ work in one of the Silesian mines. He turned himself into a frog and hid in a small hole near the entrance to the mine.
The frog did not notice a group of approaching miners and jumped out from its hideout straight onto their feet. The miners were very surprised seeing a frog in the mine. Then they started laughing and one even wanted to kick it!
But, luckily, there was an elderly miner among them, nicer and calmer, who didn’t let his colleagues hurt the frog. He took it to his workplace.
The miner put the frog on a stone, sat down and started eating his breakfast. The frog was staring at him, so he gave it bits of his bread. The frog ate everything and spoke in human voice. It promised to help the miner to excavate coal. The miner was really surprised, but said nothing and got down to work.
The frog showed him the spots in which he should start digging for coal and at night – it worked instead of him! At the end of the month it turned out that this miner had excavated a record amount of good quality coal.
When the miner got his salary, he decided to share it evenly with the frog. He even gave it one coin more than he took for himself. The frog was overjoyed and asked him to invite it to his home for dinner. The miner immediately agreed and invited his helper for the following evening’s meal.
The miner’s wife prepared a delicious dinner. To make it easier for the frog to reach the table, the miner prepared a special chest for it. The meal was so tasty that the frog often praised the kind lady.
At one moment the miner’s fried entered and – seeing the frog at the table – started laughing loudly. He stumbled, fell and tripped over the table, the chest and the chairs. All dishes fell to the floor, and the frog fell, too.
The miner and his wife started picking up the forks, knives, spoons and plates and the miner started looking for his guest – the frog, but it was nowhere to be found. He wanted to move the chest, but it was so heavy that he couldn’t!
Surprised, he opended the lid and saw that it was filled to the brim with gold coins! Then everyone understood that the frog was in reality the Treasurer – the legendary ghost of Silesian mines, who had for ages been helping good and honest miners.
