How Alexander Spread Greek Ideas • Built Greek-style cities • Established in different parts of the empire • They had marketplaces, temples, and theaters • Greek settlers flocked to cities • Local soldiers and government officials were to speak only Greek • Alexandria • Located in Egypt • Became a center of trade and learning • Description • Marketplace • University • gymnasium • Boasted law courts and a library • Library contained more than half a million books • Temple dedicated to Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea • Designed with wide major streets crossed by narrower streets • Theater
How Alexander Used Religion • Honored Egyptian and Persian gods • Treated equal to Greek gods • Visited oracle sites, made sacrifices and built temples in their honor • Encouraged the idea that he was a god • Priest of Ammon welcomed Alexander as "God's son" • Began wearing a crown of two rams' horns • Crown was a sacred headdress of Ammon • Egyptians encouraged to accept him as a god • Required Greeks to accept him as the son of Zeus
How Alexander Adopted the Ways of Conquered Cultures • Adopted the Persian system of government • Persian governors allowed to run day-to-day business • Appointed Macedonians to head the army • Alexander's people controlled the taxes that were collected • Borrowed Persian customs • Began wearing Persian-style clothes • Received official visitors in a luxurious tent like a Persian king • Tent support by 30 foot columns • Columns covered in gold and silver • Columns decorated with precious stones • Visitors had to greet him Persian-style • Visitors had to kneel in front of the throne bending until head touched the ground • Alexander would raise visitor, kiss them, call them "Kinsman" • Encouraged marriage between Macedonians and Persians • Married the eldest daughter of Darius
