  2. Lifelong learning • One third of the population attends school • One fourth of the workforce tends some form of non-formal education or training programmes • Continuing education is common among the working population

  3. Educational attainment • One third of the adult population has attained tertiary education • A large part of the workforce is highly educated and skilled.

  4. Attendance to Higher Education • Attendance to higher education has been rising rapidly in recent years. • The number of university students doubled between 1998 and 2006 • The entry rate to higher education is 78% • Two thirds of all higher education students are women

  5. Public expenditure • Government expenditure on education is 8% of GDP • Educational expenditure is 19% of total public expenditure

  6. Research and development (2005) • R&D expenditure accounts for 2.8 % of GDP • Iceland is ranked 5th among OECD countries for the R&D/GPD ratio.
