Jerusalem: History, Legacy, and Significance

Pt. 1: JERUSALEM – its History & Legacy Population (2018) – 8,452,841[0.11% of world population] Introduction – Four Significant Calendar Dates for Israel:- • 2 November, 1917 –The Balfour Declaration • 14 May, 1948 – Israel’s Independence Day. [1/2 June, 2019 – Jerusalem Day] • 5-10 June, 1967 - The Six-Day War • 2 May, 2017 – THE UNESCO Resolution

3. 2 May, 2017 – THE UNESCO Resolution on New US embassy in Jerusalem on May 14, 2018 “Occupied Palestine” submitted by Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Qatar and Sudan, that Israel has no legal or historical rights anywhere in Jerusalem… The vote, which coincided with Israel’s Independence Day, was passed with 22 countries in favour, 23 abstentions,10 opposed, and the reps of three countries absent…10 countries voted against – the US, UK, Italy, The Netherlands, Lithuania, Greece, Paraguay, Ukraine, Togo, and Germany. Despite 1,300 years of Muslim Arab rule, Jerusalem was never the capital of an Arab entity, nor was it ever mentioned in the Palestine Liberation Organization's covenant until Israel regained control of East Jerusalem in the Six-Day War of 1967.

JERUSALEM [Its Past History & Legacy] • The City: • Its International Status: First city of Palestine and “holy city” for 3 great world religions: Christianity, Judaism, Islam. • Its Integrated State with its 4 Quarters. • The “holy city” is 14 miles W of the Dead Sea, 33 miles E of the Mediterranean, situated on an uneven rocky plateau of 2,550 feet about 3,800 feet above the level of the Dead Sea. • David’s City, Jebusite Jerusalem was shaped like a gigantic human footprint.

5. 2. The Connotation: “Jerusalem” a. Its Origin: i. The Etymology of the name - not certain. Of Hebrew origin (?) = a hill of Jerusalem. • From Root = a dual (in allusion to its two main hills), probably refers to the two mountains on which it was built, viz., Zion and Moriah; or, as some suppose, to the two parts of the city, the "upper" and "lower city." ii. The Irony of the Name – Jerusalem, Salem (Shalom) a city of peace with little peace!

6. Its Occurrences in Scripture (KJV): • In the Old Testament– Total: 643 occ. • 1st occ., Josh. 10:1 “king of Jerusalem” cf. v. 3 • Last occ. Mal. 3:4 “the offering of…Jerusalem” • In the New Testament – Total: 83 occ. Grand Total: 726 occ. • 1st. occ., Mt. 2:1 “came wise men…to Jerusalem” • Last occ. Rev. 21:10 “holy Jerusalem…from God” c. Its Oldest form: yerūshālēm, shortened in Psa. 76:2 (cf. Gen. 14:18) to Salem.Melchizedek king of Salem…(= peace, Heb. 7:2)

7. d. Its Other Names: i. Zion/Sion(KJV) • Transliteration of Hebrew and Greek words. • “Zion”, first mentioned in the account of David’s conquest of Jerusalem – the blind and the lame! (II Sam. 5:6, 7-10; I Chron. 11:4-9). • Jerusalem was the name of the city state as a whole and included numerous villages and houses located outside of the fortified area of the city itself. • After David captured Zion, he resided there and changed its name to the “city of David.”

8. Zion was used by biblical writers in a variety of ways (cf. Psa. 137) • Temple built by Solomon – (Psa. 2:6; 48:2; 84:7; 132:13). • Israel as a nation – (Isa. 1:27) • The capital of Judah – (Amos 6:1). • The city of God in the new age (Isa. 1:27; 28:16; 33:5) • Heavenly Jerusalem (Isa. 60:14; Heb.12:22; Rev. 14:1)

9. i. Zion/Sion (KJV)ii. The City of David – the Citadel "Zion" of the Jebusitesbecame the "City of David" • David took the strong hold of Zion: the same is the city of David. II Sam. 5:7; I Chr. 11:5 • Solomon assembled the elders of Israel, and all the heads of the tribes, the chief of the fathers of the children of Israel, unto king Solomon in Jerusalem, that they might bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of the city of David, which is Zion I Kings 8:1

10. iii. The City of God – • There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. Psa. 46:4 • Rehoboam…reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the LORD did choose out of all the tribes of Israel, to put His name there. I Kgs. 14:21 • Jerusalem, the city where I have chosen to put My name. I Kgs. 11:36

13. D. GOD’S CURSE ON THE JEWS AND JERUSALEM OR THEIR HISTORY. • Past History of the Jews and Jerusalem: • David Captured City from Jebusites. II Sam. 5:7; • David bringing the Ark into the city. II Sam. 6:2-17 • Its Destruction by Nebuchadnezzar. i. Pictured in Daniel’s Image and Beasts Dan. 2:37; 7:4 (Times of the Gentiles. Lk. 21:24) • Prophesied in Ezekiel’s warning to Israel.Eze.17:12 iii. Inhabitants deported for 70 years (606-536B.C.) Temple Razed (586B.C.). II Chr. 36:19-21

14. k. After Octavian (Augustus) established himself as ruler of the Roman world and restored order to the Empire and after Herod the Great established himself as king in Jerusalem, the city soon again became restored to much of its former grandeur. l. Under Herod the Temple was enlarged and beautified. It was in this state that Christ found the city. Under Herod the city was given a better water supply. Under Herod’s grandson, Herod Agrippa, in a.d. 41, the area inside the city wall was doubled.

15. JERUSALEM - Pt. II 2. Present History and Prospective Eschatology of Jerusalem– Pt. 2 • Bad government by Roman procurators, appointed over Judea as a Roman province, led to discontent and rebellion, however; • and finally Titus laid siege to the city and destroyed it in a.d. 70, sacrificing one million lives.
