Free! Partly because of the hostage situation in Iran, Carter lost the election of 1980 to Ronald Reagan. The Iranians finally released the hostages after President Regan took the Oath of Office. Reagan symbolized a return to “Traditional American Values”.
A Woman??? He proposed a new policy called deregulation, which means cutting the rules and regulations government agencies placed on businesses. He appointed Sandra Day O’Connor in 1981, the first woman ever appointed to the Supreme Court.
Again! In 1984 terrorists with ties to the Iranian government took U.S. citizens hostage in Lebanon. President Reagan made a deal with the terrorists and with the help of Iran he negotiated the sale of weapons to the terrorists in exchange for the hostages. This became known as the Iran Contra Scandal.
New Vocabulary In the Soviet Union a new leader was elected, Mikhail Gorbachev. His policy, called glasnost, was designed at opening Soviet society to new ideas. He was open to talks with the U.S. and in 1988 President Reagan visited Berlin and gave a speech asking him to tear down the Berlin Wall.
