  4. Happiness: The state of being at perfect satisfaction with oneself. • NOT FOUND IN: • Money • Power • Fame • Achievement • BUT ONLY IN GOD! • Holiness: Living according to God’s plan. Happiness and Holiness

  5. If there is a God, God created us. • If God created us, then living according to God’s plan is the only way to happiness.. • Holiness = living according to God’s plan. • Conclusion: If there is a God, then holiness is the only way to happiness. Happiness and Holiness

If you want to be happy, be holy! • Holiness: “Life according to the manufacturer’s instructions.” • Holiness is for EVERYONE! • The specific way to holiness is radically INDIVIDUAL—exercised in a state in life (i.e. single person, married, priest, nun, monk, deacon, etc.) • State in Life: the vehicle in which we live out our call to holiness. • Requires grace: free gift of God’s favor and help in our lives. Living a Holy Life

  7. “When I am lifted up from the Earth, I will draw all people to myself.” (Jn 12:32) • Church = Greek ekklēsia (“called out from”); a gathering of Christians both in individual cities as well as throughout the world. • 2 NT metaphors for the Church: • Mystical Body (cf. 1 Corinthians 12) • Pilgrim Church (cf. 1 Peter 2:11) Holiness in the Church

Discipleship: Being a “learner” of Christ (from Latin discipulus= student, trainee). • The PRIVATE part of living our faith • Evangelization: Publicly living our faith so that others can hear the Gospel (from Greek = euaggelizein, to proclaim Good News). • The PUBLIC part of living our faith Two Dimensions of Holiness

  9. Saints: Those who have attained personal holiness. (Some are canonized = officially recognized by the Church as saints.) • Martyrs: From Greek word “witness”; particular saints died for Christ; term can also describe those who suffer in witness to Christ. Examples of Holiness

Luke 13:20-21: 20Again he said, “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? 21It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed [in] with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch of dough was leavened.” • We are called to allow our entire lives (the whole batch of dough) to be touched by the Gospel (the leaven/yeast).
