  1. Stage 1 – Sensory Memory Immediate initial recording that comes in through the senses. All the senses have sense registers. Decays in a few moments. Iconic Memory – mental pictures of visual stimuli, snapshots (icons) Eidetic Memory – photographic memory Echoic Memory – Mental traces of sound lasts several seconds long – this is why it is good to say things aloud

  2. Stage 2 – Short-Term Memory • A.K.A. – “Working Memory” • Fades after several seconds – need to encode it to keep it; only have a limited amount of time to do so. • The Primacy/Recency Effects • Chunking (George Miller, p. 162) • Interference (Experiment) • Acoustic codes last longer.

Stage 3 – Long-Term Memory • Need to take steps to get there. • Maintenance rehearsal (singing a song) song • Elaborative rehearsal (contains words, sounds, smells, pictures, tastes, touches) • Limited by the amount of time and attention we pay it (think of your education). • Reconstruction • Bits & Pieces put back together according to our individual world view – we put our stamp on our memory. • Schemas • Mental representations
