Finding include … • Rates of teenage pregnancy 25% higher than the national average • Abortion rates rising by 4% a year, with 1 in 4 under the age of 25 having had one or more previous abortions • Ten inner city wards account for around 46% cases of gonorrhea, 54% syphilis, 32% teenage pregnancies, 37% terminations and 30% terminations under the age of 20 years
Trends in Birmingham • Latest ONS figures (provisional) for 2007 • 53.2 per 1000 girls aged 15-17 in 2006 to 52.8 in 2007 • 1,119 conceptions to under 18 years with 51% being terminated • Compared to England and the West Midlands, Birmingham has seen a slight decrease in trend with an achievement of -9.5% decline compared to -8.2% across the region and to a -10.7% overall decline nationally

Birmingham Teenage Executive Group Teenage Pregnancy Grant is allocated to key area’s:- • Targeted schools and locality work • Targeted Youth Support Team • Vulnerable Young People’s Team • PRUs, LACES and Youth Offending Teams • Condom distribution scheme • Training / workforce development • Termination follow up • Active Case Management • Young Parents Housing Support *Additional contraceptive funding has been awarded for schemes to improve knowledge and awareness and uptake of contraception
