  1. CHINA AS AN EXAMPLE OF A CORE AND PERIPHERY CASE STUDY Noémie GOURLAY TS7

  2. A core and periphery model • Resources being drawn from periphery to the core • Therefore core is stronger bur periphery remains weaker •  Backwash effect • Although sometimes core helps periphery to develop • Spread effect

  3. What is a ‘core’? • Where most of the positive characteristics of globalization typically occur: transnational links, modern development, scientific innovation, and increasing economic prosperity.

  4. What is a ‘periphery’? • Rest of the country generally characterised by: • Extreme poverty • Low standard of living: poor infrastructure so creation of slums • Generally unexistent healthcare: limited access to clean water • A population skyrocketing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVGdECND9Fs

  5. China as a case study • The CORE: South-Est • The PERIPHERY: North + Centre

  6. The Chinese core • Near the sea  geographic advantage • Very rich reason + highest GDP • China’s capital, Beijing + largest ports, Hong-Kong and Shanghai are on the coast • 90% Chinese trade by sea + 44% of world trade passes by Chinese ports

  7. Lifestyles inequalities Worker in the core Worker in the periphery VS.

  8. Economic inequalities between core and periphery • Core receives more investments, especially FDI • North + center still farming but little technology  Very low income for farmers in rural areas

  9. A question of population • The core is more largely populated because it’s where all the jobs can be found • There is a higher life expectancy in the core than in the periphery

  10. The periphery abandoned by the core • Agriculture depression in periphery areas • All of the resources are being drawn to the core and nothing is left for those in the periphery •  Farmers regularly revolt but never really heard of in the world news (kept secret by the government)

  11. Dangers with a big ‘core and periphery’ split and the government’s actions to prevent them DANGERS GOVERNMENT’S INITIATIVES Relaxation of One Child policy Relocation of some companies to more affordable inland cities/regions The Western Region Development Initiative of 1999 • Rural feeling of abandonment • Feeling of resentment towards the core’s wealth • Desertification of the periphery areas
