  2. What is a One Read? A One Read is as simple as it sounds. Give copies of the same book to a group and then bring them together to talk about it.

  3. One Read Program Goals: 1. To encourage adults to read more.

  4. One Read Program Goals: 2. To strengthen our communities by bringing people together to share ideas and learn from one another.

  5. Planning the ACF One Read • Received funding from the Library Foundation of Hennepin County (July 2009) • Requested title suggestions from and selected book (August 2009) • Ordered books, requested signed bookplates from publisher, and booked performer (September 2009)

  6. Program Planning Continued • Coordinated HCL staff participation for discussion groups (September 2009) • Promoted program with flyers/ bookmarks and distributed books (October 2009) • Hosted One Read at ACF (November 9, 2009)

  7. ACF One Read Program Details The program began with a small group discussion about the book for 30 minutes in each of the four resident units. These were facilitated by all of the former Corrections librarians and HCL staff. HCL has provided library service to ACF for over 25 years.   8. Program Details Continued After the book discussion, everyone gathered together for a performance by Minnesota Orchestra cellist Katja Linfield.

  9. Program Details Continued At the end of the program, Katja and staff from the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the Hennepin County Office to End Homelessness answered residents’ questions about music, mental health, and homelessness. An information table with resources for residents was also available.

  10. One Community of Readers Over 55 people participated in the program: 30+ residents 10 HCL staff 6 ACF staff 9 community members

  21. 10. What other types of programs would you like offered at ACF? Other Suggestions: • Computer literacy • Tutoring • Health information

  22. 11. Is there anything else that you would like to share about your experience reading this book or the One Read? “I loved it and it really helped me feel normal for the evening. Thank you!” “I never thought I would be part of a book club, but now that I had the experience and enjoyed it, this is something I definitely would take part in again.” “The performance was awesome and the music was relaxing and calming and made me forget all my problems for a whole half hour. Which felt wonderful. Thank you! ”

Next Steps: One Read & Other Programs • Share results of this One Read program with the the Library Foundation and ACF staff • Continue to recruit and support volunteers for book clubs at each ACF facility • Increase job resource and small business workshops • Explore funding options for a 2010 One Read at ACF
