  4. Introduction Maintaining youth is what’s on everybody’s minds these days. From the latest in plastic surgery to breakthroughs in skin care, anti-aging treatments are all the rage. And people are delving into the trend at younger and younger ages. People in their twenties are trying out night creams and plastic surgeries to keep aging at bay. I suppose the thinking is by starting early on the anti-aging bandwagon, you’ll delay the effects longer. There may be some truth in this notion, especially when it comes to taking care of your body. This e-book is designed to help you discover the treatments and lifestyle choices that will make you look years younger for years longer! The sooner you start, the longer you will both look and feel young. So what are you waiting for? Get reading now and begin your journey down your path to youth! 4 http://WellnessNow.ga

  5. Chapter 1 – Preventing the Aging Process One of the best ways to prevent aging is to simply take care of yourself. Many people treat their bodies badly throughout their youth, only to discover that when they hit the age of 35 (or earlier) that they’re feeling not quite so spry and that they’re not as spunky as they used to be. The true key to preventing aging is to start early in your anti-aging endeavors. You don’t have to be drastic. In fact, simple lifestyle changes can make all the difference when it comes to living a longer, healthier life. You can start your journey by: 1. Altering your diet 2. Taking part in exercise 3. Quitting bad habits 4. Lowering your stress levels 5. Generally taking care of yourself! This sounds pretty simple, right? Wrong! If you’ve ever smoked, you know just how hard it is to quit despite your knowledge of how bad it is for you. And if you’ve ever tried to start an exercise regimen, you know just how hard it is to stick to it. Likewise, going on a diet or cutting out the junk food in your diet may look easy on paper, but it’s really much more difficult in application. I know, I know. It sounds impossible now. Why even bother starting on the road toward a longer life? Quite simply, you’ll gain a longer life out of it! That in and of itself should be enough incentive to hop on the treadmill and to put down the bag of chips. Now remember: these are lifestyle changes that you can make in your day-to-day life. No special equipment is required and you can complete these changes within the comfort of your own home. However, it is imperative that you know in order to truly delay aging, you’ll need to commit. This doesn’t mean eating a healthy meal once a day or jogging once a month. Rather, it means making a life- long commitment to a healthier, heartier you. So, have I scared you away? Apparently not—you’re still reading! Well, you’re in luck, because the following chapters will help you start living a healthier life, thus making yourself look and feel younger for longer. 5 http://WellnessNow.ga

  6. Chapter 2 – Delaying Aging With Diet Going on a diet can be one of the most difficult commitments you can ever make. So many people wish to go on a diet, yet it is this commitment that makes them shy away from ever going through with it. However, knowing that eating healthily and better taking care of yourself will make you look youthful for a longer period of time is often enough to keep you on that diet. You don’t have to be overweight to be unhealthy. This is often a big misconception. “I don’t need to go on a diet, I’m thin!” you may say. However, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. A thin person can have cardiovascular problems. A thin person can eat cheeseburgers everyday and end up with high cholesterol. You may not be able to see it, but when you are in your middle twenties, the aging process begins. Your internal organs may begin to be affected by that junk food you eat and your skin may start to produce less collagen. Regardless, the food you put into your body from a young age can begin to help or hinder how you will look down the road. In order to gain better control over your health, you need to eat right. Whether you’re overweight and need to lose weight or you’re just eating badly, maintaining a good diet is essential to maintaining your youth. To start off, let’s cover a few things you should absolutely avoid in order to keep that youthful glow. Foods To Avoid In order to look and feel young for a great length of time, you will need to accept that there are just some foods that promote aging rather than prevent it. If you wish to keep young, you should definitely avoid eating the following foods. Of course, you may indulge every once in awhile, but making a regular habit of eating them will only add to your age factor: - Foods high in fat - Foods high in sugar - Excessive consumption of alcohol - Red meat - Soda - Caffeine - Starchy foods like potatoes in excess - Fried foods - Processed foods - Cheese 6 http://WellnessNow.ga

  7. - Pizza - Bacon - Milk - Chocolate - White flour - Artificial sweeteners - Olestra - Hydrogenated oil - Fish with high levels of mercury - GMOs or Genetically Modified Foods - Foods cooked in the microwave - MSG - Artificial colorings - Factory farmed meats - Canola oil - Chips - Etc. The list could really go on and on. The point is that you should be aware of what it is you’re putting into your body. Don’t always believe what you hear on TV. For instance, many fast food chains are now touting “healthy” menu selections, but if you were to look at the food labels on these items, you’d be shocked to find that they are really not much better than a burger and fries. Promoting Anti-Aging With Food We’ve already established that what you put into your body can have a dramatic affect on your health and how well you age. With this in mind, it is only logical to proceed to the types of foods you can best ward off the woes of aging and stay in the best of health. So, what are the BEST foods, you ask? We’ll start out with ingredients and qualities of foods you should look for in order to bolster your diet to be high on anti-aging. Vitamin E You can ensure you get Vitamin E by means of a supplement or in foods such as almonds and mangos. Regular intake of Vitamin E or the application of it on your skin can make your skin look and feel young and supple for longer. It works by decreasing the affect of “free radicals,” which are cancer-causing cells by counteracting them. 7 http://WellnessNow.ga

  8. Antioxidants Antioxidants can prevent cancer and promote general youthfulness and health on the inside and outside of your body. There are many foods you can eat that contain antioxidants in order to keep you feeling and looking healthy for longer. These foods protect your skin from the damage of the sun and can even reverse some of such damage. Antioxidants can be taken in supplement form or by means of foods such as pomegranates, peppers and blueberries. Whole Grains Whole grains are a fantastic product that can help prevent cancer, heart disease and even diabetes. A great source of dietary fiber, whole grains are an essential part of a balanced diet. They are, essentially, grains that have not had bran and germ removed during the milling process. A healthy body means a healthy appearance and a natural glow. Great sources of whole grains include bran, brown rice, oatmeal and whole wheat breads. Vitamin C A water-soluble nutrient, vitamin C is vital to a healthy diet. While most effective as a topical agent, vitamin C is considered an antioxidant and helps prevent the pervasiveness of free radicals, the cancer causers. The decrease in collagen production is a common sign of aging, but vitamin C can help boost this production and keep skin smooth and elastic. A vitamin supplement or plenty of fruits can be eaten to ensure you have the appropriate amount of vitamin C in your system. Dietary Fiber A balanced diet can ensure you intake an adequate amount of dietary fiber, which is responsible for proper bowel function and an overall healthy body. With a lowered incidence of bowel inflammation and healthy digestive tract, your appearance will be directly affected in a positive manner. Eating plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains can help keep your body young. Calcium Calcium has a direct affect on bone health. It is with proper calcium intake, you can ensure that you will not suffer from osteoporosis as you get older and you’ll maintain good posture. There is even evidence that a balanced intake of calcium 8 http://WellnessNow.ga

  9. can help prevent arthritis, which is another condition that is synonymous with aging. Women should especially take heed to their calcium levels starting in their twenties, but preferably earlier than that. A calcium supplement may be more practical than drinking milk, as excessive milk intake can have negative effects for those with sensitive stomachs. Soy Soy is an antioxidant, but it gets its own category because it has a particularly fantastic effect on preventing and reversing the aging process. Soy has been shown to help boost the health of connective tissues and the production of collagen in the skin. As an antioxidant, soy can also reduce the damage caused by free radicals—those mutated cells that cause cancer and are directly attributed to aging. You can make sure you get enough soy in your diet by means of eating soy nuts, soymilk and other soy products. Specific Anti-Aging Food Choices You’ve gotten a taste (pun intended) of the types of foods you can eat in order to promote general health and anti-aging, but what about the specific foods you can incorporate into your daily diet to keep looking and feeling younger longer? The following list will hopefully get your started on the anti-aging path: - Yogurt - Garlic - Chives - Broccoli - Brussel sprouts - Pumpkin - Oatmeal - Cabbage - Soy - Salmon - Olive oil - Mangos - Oranges - Grapefruit - Bran - Trout - Cantaloupe - Sweet potatoes - Blueberries - Tomatoes - Green tea 9 http://WellnessNow.ga

  10. - Cauliflower - Cherries - Grapes - Squash - Shallots - Spinach - Asparagus - Apricots - Strawberries - Whole grain wheat bread - Tofu - Raw nuts - Lentils - Spirulina - Brown rice - Wheatgrass juice - Aloe vera - Omega 3 fatty acids - Vitamin D - Sea salt - Sprouted beans - Legumes - Hot peppers - Acai - Barley - Leeks - Scallions - Water!!! Now some of these foods may seem a bit odd; however, they can easily be included in your diet and in dishes you already eat. But diet is just the first step to maintaining your physical youth and health, inside and out. 10 http://WellnessNow.ga

  11. Chapter 3 – Delaying Aging With Exercise Exercise is really the key to health and longevity. There isn’t any one method or technique of exercise that promotes anti-aging; however, there are some types of exercise that work better than others. Not only can exercising make you healthier, but it can also help you lose weight if that is your goal, which in turn, will also make you healthier. If you come from a line of not exercising at all, you certainly wouldn’t want to dive right in and start running ten miles a day. The Beginnings The key to a successful exercise regimen is to start slowly and commit. You can begin by just walking for 20-30 minutes a day. If you get no exercise at all this would definitely be a vast improvement by getting up off the couch everyday. If you are a bit older in age, you can still help slow down the aging process by walking everyday and by taking care of yourself, now. Regardless of what you may think—it is NEVER too late to start taking care of yourself. While aerobic activity is definitely a necessity in order to have a healthy body and a longer life, strength training is equally important in order to prevent or lessen the effects of aging. Just look at some of the conditions you can prevent or reverse the effects of by taking up exercise: - Back pain - Joint pain - Insomnia - Stress - Arthritis - Mental fatigue - Osteoporosis - Muscle stiffness And, you can gain much by exercising regularly, regardless of what age you begin, including: - Flexibility - Healthy weight - Greater mobility - Greater stamina - Toned muscles - Better sex life - Clearer, healthier skin 11 http://WellnessNow.ga

  12. - Stress reduction - Improved attitude - Overall better outlook on life Cardiovascular Exercises Now that you’ve been walking around the block for a few weeks, you can progress to more aggressive exercises. Of course, you should meet with your doctor prior to starting a new workout routine to ensure you have no underlying health problems of which exercise may exacerbate. If you’re in good general health and want to forge ahead into cardiovascular fitness, this section is designed to provide you with exercises and fitness tips. However, as with anything, you should progress slowly through new exercises until you feel comfortable with them. Pushing yourself a bit is great and will challenge your body, but overdoing it can cause damage and prevent you from exercising for a while. And you certainly don’t want that! Here are a few exercise ideas to help get your heart rate up and help you shed pounds or keep fit: Power Walking If you are a bit older or really out of shape, power walking is a great way to ease into more intense cardiovascular exercise. A brisk walk through your local park is a great way to get outdoors and get up your heart rate. Be sure to swing your arms fully and you can also carry light weights in your hands to boost the intensity of the workout. Even better, a slight incline on your walking path can greatly increase the calories you burn. Swimming Many people think swimming is a leisurely type of exercise. After all, you do just splash around in the water, right? While there may be splashing involved, swimming can be very intense and will definitely boost your heart rate. You may even notice that your muscles feel very sore after a swimming session. This is due to the fact that you use just about every muscle in your body when you swim, making it the perfect cardiovascular workout and the perfect way to tone and shape your entire body. 12 http://WellnessNow.ga

  13. Biking Riding a bicycle around your town or simply using a stationary bike while watching TV can help you get in that cardio exercise without making it feel as though you’ve exerted tons of energy. Many people’s complaint about exercise is that it’s boring and that they simply don’t enjoy doing it. But if you’re biking around the city on a beautiful day, you don’t notice how far you’ve gone or how much of a workout you’re really getting. Nor do you notice when you’re beginning to feel out of breath when you’re pedaling and watching a beloved sitcom. Cardio Workout Machines Whether it’s the cross-country skiing machine, the treadmill or the elliptical machine, you’re bound to get an effective workout. These machines can be adjusted for skill level and you can add more resistance depending on how in shape you are. You’ll never get bored as these machines will always be able to challenge your fitness level. Aerobics Aerobics is a really fun way to stay in shape and maintain your youth. While women primarily utilize this form of exercise, anyone can do it. Step aerobics in particular workout the legs, glutes, thighs and hips mostly, but it also elevates your heart rate and allows you to burn calories—great if you’re trying to lose weight—or simply maintain a healthy body. Dancing Dancing can be very freeing for some people and makes an excellent way to get fit and enjoy yourself. Depending on the type of dance, you can burn many calories in a session and you can also elevate your heart rate and keep your body long and lean. After all, how many times have you heard about the dancer’s body being the envy of all? And who could forget those women that are in their seventies but still have killer legs from the years and years of dancing? Wouldn’t you like that to be you? Try something spicy like salsa or if you’re more technically inclined, modern or jazz. 13 http://WellnessNow.ga

  14. Running Many people prefer running as their cardio exercise of choice. Quite simply, this is due to the fact that all you need is a good pair of supportive shoes and you can be off and, well, running! Not only do you burn some serious calories when you hit the pavement, but you also keep your legs, arms, buttocks and heart in shape, which are some of the primary parts of the body that contribute to looking and feeling younger for longer. Strength Exercises It is believed that strength training is the real aging buster. Why is this exactly? As you age, your muscles become much more lax than they used to be and they fail to maintain a healthy shape that allows you to perform strenuous tasks. This goes hand in hand with the fact that when you age, you tend to become less active and will gain weight. Be sure to keep up your aerobic activity as well, but by incorporating strength training into your workout regimen, you’re sure to build up your muscle tone and your overall strength allowing you to take part in physical activities even as you become a senior citizen and beyond. So what sorts of benefits does strength training afford to your body and overall health? Just look at some of these fantastic benefits: - Toned muscles - Younger physique - Improved bone density - Improved posture - Lessened joint pain - Tighter, toned skin - Increased metabolism - Improved circulation - Relief from arthritis symptoms - Lowered blood pressure - Relief of lower back pain - Increased strength - Increased stamina - Improved flexibility and mobility Now that you know just how strength training can help you and your body maintain their youthfulness, let’s take a look at the type of exercises that will keep your body toned and in shape for longer. 14 http://WellnessNow.ga

  15. One word of caution: if you’ve never practiced strength exercises before, it’s a good idea to visit your doctor to get his go ahead and then hire a personal trainer at a gym to ensure you’re performing these exercises properly. Improper practice of these exercises can either afford you little to no results or injury! Some strength exercises to try include: Bicep Curls You can find small dumbbells at your local sports shop. If you’re just starting out, try the five-pound weights at first. To perform the exercise, hold the weight in your right hand. Place your arm comfortably to your side, with palm facing forward. Slowly raise your arm by bending your elbow until the weight is in line with your shoulder. Hold this position for a second and then slowly raise your arm back down. Repeat about 10 times and then switch arms. Repetitions can be increased after you become comfortable with the exercise as can the amount of weight you lift. Crunches Please be warned: if you have neck or back problems, this may not be the best exercise choice for you. Crunches can help tone your stomach muscles and improve your posture. To do them, you will need to lie on your back with feet flat on the floor and knees bent. Place your hands behind your head—but don’t push your head with your hands, either. Slowly roll your body up by contracting the abdominal muscles. Do not sit all the way up! Rather, hold the position with your shoulder blades off of the floor and your abs contracted. Slowly lower back down to a lying down position. Repeat. You can increase the amount of repetitions as you gain experience. Leg Lifts You can think of leg lifts as a sort of reversed crunch or sit up. You can begin by lying flat on the ground with legs outstretched. Contract your abdominal muscles and make sure your lower back is on the floor. Next, raise your legs until they form a table top of sorts—your thighs should be perpendicular to the floor and your lower legs should be parallel. Next, slowly lower your legs and straighten them at the same time, bringing them within inches of the floor and then repeat the exercise. This one really works the lower abdominals, buttocks and thighs. 15 http://WellnessNow.ga

  16. Push ups You know what’s really great about push-ups? They provide an excellent workout of the arms and back without the high cost of a machine. All you need is yourself and a flat surface! To do a push-up, lie flat on the ground with your palms on the floor, about shoulder-width apart and your toes tucked under your feet so that they are ready. Next, push your body up off of the floor with your arms. Keep your body straight and allow your arms to completely straighten out. Next, lower your body back down until your body almost touches the floor and then repeat. You can perform a modified version of this exercise until you have built up more arm strength. Rather than tucking your toes under, place your weight on your knees. You can then perform the push-ups to great effectiveness without as much stress. Pilates Pilates is a fantastic form of exercise that can get your entire body into shape. In fact, it is said that after just a few days of performing Pilates you’ll feel a difference. Rather than going into detail about the types of exercises you can perform, I suggest you purchase or rent a Pilates video (or go to a class to really learn proper technique). A video will detail each exercise, each of which has a focus on the “core” of your body, with is the band of abdominal muscles that maintain your posture. A younger body is within reach with Pilates. Tricep Curls Remember those weights I suggested you buy earlier? It’s time to break them out again for some tricep curls. Many people find the upper arms to be a particularly troublesome spot to tone and the tricep curl will get it in shape fast. Begin by placing the weight in your right hand. Bend over so that you’re leaning with your arm on a table of flat surface. Bend your knees slightly and make sure one foot is slightly in front of the other. With your arm hanging loosely at your side, slowly raise it so that it’s bent 90 degrees, Next, slowly lower your arm back down to your side by straightening it out. Repeat five times and then switch arms. Kick Backs This exercise, like several others here requires no additional equipment other than your own body and something to lean on like a chair. Begin by standing about a foot away from the chair with your feet a bit separated from each other. Next, lean forward at your hips and hold onto the chair with one hand. Lift your right leg backwards and behind you without behind your knee or leaning any farther forward. Slowly return the leg to the floor. You can amplify this exercise by 16 http://WellnessNow.ga

  17. kicking your leg backwards and slowly bringing it back forward. This can increase the tension on your thigh muscle and further increase the mobility in your hips. You can repeat this exercise about 10 times and then switch legs. Arm Raises For the final exercise in this section, you’re going to need to get out your hand weights once more. While sitting down or standing, place a weight in both hands. Make sure your feet are shoulder width apart and that your arms are pressed to your sides. Slowly raise both of your arms at the same time to the height of your shoulder. Hold this position for a few seconds and then slowly lower the arms back down to your sides. Repeat this exercise about 15 times. Don’t tense your neck or strain as you perform this exercise. It is important to begin with low-impact exercises, only as you need to ascertain the strength of your muscles currently. After several sessions you can slowly increase the intensity of your workout as the muscles around your joints strengthen. If you suffer from a condition that compromises the strength of your joints, you should be particularly cautious. I know I’ve mentioned it at least two times before, but I feel it is important to mention it one more time: whenever you are starting a new exercise plan, it is important to make a visit to your doctor for a complete health evaluation. Only with your doctor’s go-ahead should you embark upon a new exercise regimen. Doing otherwise can be detrimental to your health and wellbeing, and you certainly don’t want that! 17 http://WellnessNow.ga

  18. Chapter 4 – Delaying Aging With Stress Reduction As you may or may not know, stress is a leading cause of premature death. “What?” you may be asking. “What about heart disease? What about cancer?” You’d be absolutely correct in noting that there are major diseases that act as the leading causes of death in the world, but stress is a prime contributing factor to the onset of such conditions. Going along with this notion, high stress levels can leave you with high blood pressure, broken out skin, rashes, fatigue and a whole host of other problems. Basically, stress ages you! No matter how you look at it, consistently high stress levels put undue damage on your body and create situations in which you’ll begin to show your age much sooner in life than you’d like. “But what can I do?” you say. “Life is difficult and it’s pretty near impossible to get away from stress.” If you think this, you’d be absolutely right. However, there are ways in which you can combat stress head on and continue to take part in life— getting your kids to school on time, making that important business deal and planning a romantic vacation for two. There are several ways you can beat stress by learning to cope with the stresses of daily life. It may be as simple as taking a five-minute break to just take a breather or attending a yoga class. Whatever works for you and your schedule is right for you. Before we get into the details of how you can become stress-free, just look at these amazing benefits of reducing your stress level: - Better mood - Positive attitude - Better sleep - Less anxiety - Better ability to deal with the unexpected - Better sex-life - Reduced fatigue - Increased stamina - Improved complexion - Improved circulation - Lower heart rate - Lower blood pressure - Better joint mobility - Healthier skin and tissues - Improved mental capacity - Improved concentration - Increased alertness - Lessened chances of serious diseases - Improved digestion 18 http://WellnessNow.ga

  19. - Increased flow of endorphins - Reduction of bodily toxins - Reduced muscle tension - Reduced breath rate - Reduction of chronic symptoms from conditions such as: o IBS o Fatigue o Migraines o Tension headaches o Heartburn o And more! With all of these benefits, who wouldn’t want a bit of stress reduction in their lives? Not to mention, each and every one of these benefits directly relates to your appearance and how you feel. That’s right: by reducing your stress level, you can look and feel younger for longer! How To Reduce Your Stress Level There are many different ways stress can be obliterated from your life, but it is up to you to find the method that best suits you, your schedule and your interests. The following should give you enough ideas and options so you can find the stress reduction strategy that will work for you. Deep Breathing Deep breathing is a great way to calm your nerves and relieve stress in a hurry. Whether you’re in the middle of work or in a stressful situation, just excuse yourself for a few minutes, go to a quiet room and sit down. Sit up straight and close your eyes. Relax your body, especially your neck and shoulders. Take a slow, deep breath in through the nose, hold the breath for a count of three and then exhale slowly. As you exhale, make sure you let the rest of your muscles relax. Repeat this for a total of 5 times. Just don’t breathe too deeply—you don’t want to hyperventilate. Meditation Mediation is something that goes right along with deep breathing, but requires a bit more time. When you have between 20 and 30 minutes time, go to a quiet place and sit with your back straight and against a supportive surface. Close your eyes. Relax your arms and place your hands on your knees with palms facing upward. Take in a deep breath, hold for a count of three and exhale slowly. While exhaling, let the tension in your body slip away and feel each muscle relax. While 19 http://WellnessNow.ga

  20. breathing like this, you can picture each part of your body relaxing completely, starting with your toes, moving all the way up to your head. Once you’re completely relaxed, you can meditate on anything really, from a certain situation in your life or just an image. The key to successful meditation is keeping your mind focused on one thing and one thing only. You shouldn’t be aware of your body and should maintain a single particular thought. If, however, your mind does begin to wander—as it will because it’s human nature—just gently focus your attention back on the desired subject and strive to maintain this as long as possible. When you’re done, slowly make yourself aware of your body once again, and open your eyes. Slowly stretch your arms above your head and your legs out in front of you. Try meditating a few times a week. You will definitely notice a difference right away. Yoga Yoga is a fantastic way to relieve stress and in turn, maintain your youth. You should probably attend a class or buy a video that breaks down the details of how to perform yoga. Yoga is an ancient practice that combines the art of meditation and physical movement in order to create complete mind and body awareness. Once you get the whole meditation thing down, you can then incorporate the movements of yoga. Each movement should flow seamlessly into one another. The primary focus of yoga is on breathing and maintaining a specific type of breathing. Again, seek out a good yoga instructional video to gain a better idea of how to go about practicing it. Exercise We’ve already gone over several different types of exercises in this e-book. However, it is worth mentioning the valuable nature of exercise and its effect on stress level. You know how when you’re done working out and you feel exhilarated and generally good all over? That’s exactly why exercise is a fantastic stress reliever. Whenever you’re feeling overwhelmed in life, having a good workout will release a ton of endorphins and improve your mood. A Companion Animal Studies have shown that having a pet can dramatically reduce stress, thus making you look and feel younger. By having a companion animal, you can boost your spirits and relieve stress. Whether it is playing fetch with your dog or simply relaxing with your cat on the couch, you’ll feel more relaxed, therefore less stressed when interacting with your furry friends. 20 http://WellnessNow.ga

  21. Taking Part in a Hobby Having something interesting to partake in can remove a lot of stress from one’s life. Whether you like to build model cars, take dance classes or experiment with recipes, hobbies are a great way to relieve the tension from the day and still be productive. If you’re one of those “hands-on” people that need to be active often, a hobby might just be the right way to go. Making “Me” Time People are having to give more and more of their time away these days just to make ends meet. And once the bills are paid, there’s soccer practice for the kids and taking care of the house to tend to. All of these responsibilities can lead to a large stress pile-up and premature aging. That’s why making time for yourself each and everyday can really help to lower your stress level and keep you sane. Partaking in an activity you love, taking a nap or simply relaxing in the bath can be just enough to make each day more pleasant and bearable. Tai Chi A form of martial arts, Tai Chi is a great way to keep your body limber and to relieve stress. This art form involves concentrated breathing and very, very slow movements. These movements are similar to those of other martial arts forms, but they are so slowed down that you really can feel each muscle in your body working and each breath you inhale. The thinking behind this form of physical activity is that by moving in specific ways, you manipulate the energy around you (called “chi”) and bring a better lifestyle to yourself. Aromatherapy Aromatherapy can be used for all sorts of purposes. Whether you want to feel invigorated or relaxed, there’s an aromatherapy out there to suit your purposes. However, for ultimate relaxation and stress reduction, lavender candles, oils or incense are a great way to calm the nerves. For the perfect combination, run a nice, hot bath and light a lavender scented candle to help transport to a place of stress-free bliss. Massage Who doesn’t love a good massage? And when you’ve had a particularly rough day at work or just need some attention, a massage from a loved one or even at 21 http://WellnessNow.ga

  22. a massage therapy clinic can be just the relief you need. By targeting muscles that are extraordinarily tense and that cause you the most discomfort, a massage can relax your body and your mind, reducing overall stress levels and leaving you looking and feeling much younger. Sex You can giggle all you want, but it’s true: sex is a great stress reliever. When you’re frustrated about your job or other responsibilities, a great distraction and great release is sex. You and your partner can share and intimate evening at home, worrying only about pleasure and not about all of the other drivel of life. While sex may cause muscles to tense and the heartbeat to rise, the release of orgasm can cause a surge of endorphins to flood the body and those muscles to relax more fully. 22 http://WellnessNow.ga

  23. Chapter 5 – The Best Anti-Aging Skin Treatments Many people can predict a person’s age based on the smoothness of their skin. However, if you take care of yourself by eating right, exercising regularly and keeping your stress level down, you can battle the signs of aging and have smoother skin for longer. Even so, taking the best care of your body can still allow some small lines and wrinkles to appear—a surefire sign of aging. That’s why many people take the next step in anti-aging care and treat their skin. There are many different types of skin treatments available from night creams to dermabrasion. Deciding which treatment is best for your skin is ultimately up to you, but hopefully this chapter will give you a sense of the treatments that are out there so when the time comes you’ll be able to make an educated decision. As always be sure to check with your doctor before you begin any serious skin treatments as you will need to know if any chemicals in these products will cause a bad reaction with any other medication you may be taking. Additionally, if you decide to perform any of these treatments at home, be sure to read the directions twice and the warning labels. There is no room for making mistakes on your face! Now let’s get down to business: SPF 35 This one sounds like a no brainer, no doubt. But, sunblock is one of the most important skin treatments available. Sun exposure is one of the leading causes of skin damage and aging. By applying SPF 35 to your face, hands and other areas exposed to the sun everyday, you can prevent sunspots, moles, freckles and wrinkles, not to mention skin cancer! Just make sure the sunscreen is oil free and non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog pores and cause other skin problems. Face Masks Everyone’s seen a relative or friend with one of those goopy, gloppy masks on, right? Well, it might be about time for you to try one out as well! Face masks can tighten the skin and smooth the skin, reducing the look of lines and improving skin’s texture. There are many different types of masks out there on the market. One of the most popular types you can make at your own home. It consists of a mixture of avocado, honey and egg yolk. After mashing the ingredients together, just apply it to your face and feel these natural products work! 23 http://WellnessNow.ga

  24. Moisturizers As you get older, your skin tends to lose some of its youthful glow, and by that I mean its moisture. In order to keep your skin looking soft and supple, you’ll need to apply a moisturizer of some sort. Those containing aloe vera are especially good as they’ll work hard to clean your skin looking and feeling smoother. If you have oily skin, be careful. Too much moisture can cause breakouts and you certainly don’t want to have to deal with that! Soy Soy is good for a lot of different reasons, but in regards to the skin, it’s fantastic! As we age, the skin begins to slow down collagen production, causing the formation of wrinkles and less vibrant skin. However, applying a cream containing soy to your face will boost collagen production and can actually reverse some appearances of aging! It is truly a miracle product that everyone should have in their cabinets. Vitamin C Vitamin C is just generally good for you, but it has special effects when applied topically to the skin. Vitamin C contains ascorbic acid, which has been shown to help reverse sun damage. Since sun damage is one of the primary causes of aging, Vitamin C is a likely addition to your beauty regimen. It is available in both a cream and serum form, just be sure to read the labels, as the serum may not be right for sensitive skin types. Vitamin D Vitamin D is an essential nutrient to your body. Ironically, it is produced in your body as a response to sun exposure. That’s right: being out in the sun is actually good for you. It’s important to not overdo it, of course, but a little bit of sun exposure can be good for you, as it’s next to impossible to get the amount of Vitamin D you need out of your diet alone. This vitamin is also essential in having strong healthy bones—not osteoporosis—as it plays a major role in the absorption of calcium in your body! Royal Jelly So far, you’ve probably heard of the chemicals and compounds I’ve mentioned that have fantastic results on reversing aging, but Royal Jelly is probably not one 24 http://WellnessNow.ga

  25. of them. Royal Jelly is a substance that is secreted from the salivary glands of worker bees and then fed to the queen bee. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding this product, especially when taken as an oral supplement. It is reported to cure all sorts of ailments even though no studies have been done to show this. However, in a cream form, Royal Jelly is great for the skin. It will tighten the pores and prevent bacterial contamination—a leading cause of acne breakouts—and helps to boost cell growth. All of this means better looking skin that appears and feels much younger! Retin-A Retin-A is a prescription drug that can help reverse the signs of aging by fading sun spots, lines and wrinkles. Basically, this product aims to reverse sun damage. It is also prescribed as an acne treatment by pushing acne bacteria to the surface of the skin, allowing it to run its course much quicker. This drug can make you much more sensitive to sunlight, however, so an oil-free sunscreen is an absolute necessity. Chemical Peels There are two different types of chemical peels: those you do at home and those you have done professionally. An at-home chemical peel contains glycolic acid and can usually be purchased in various percentages of strength. This acidic peel will slough off the first layer of skin and stimulate new skin growth. This can really turn back the clock on aging, slowly buffing away fine lines and wrinkles and evening out your complexion and skin tone. A chemical peel you’d have done in an office, trichloroacetic acid or TCA is used. It is much stronger and your skin will look bright pink and peely for awhile after the procedure. But don’t worry, you’ll be provided with a special make up so you can venture out into the world as you heal. Microdermabrasion Microdermabrasion is a generally gentle and mild form of plastic surgery that works by buffing off the top layers of skin. The doctor will use a small device that sprays small particles on your face and then uses suction to removed the skin cells that are dead and causing the wrinkles and blotchiness. It will take more than one treatment to achieve the results you desire, but the treatment is mild and has a very brief recovery time. 25 http://WellnessNow.ga

  26. Dermabrasion Dermabrasion is a form of plastic surgery that involves the scraping away of the outer layers of skin with an instrument that has a rough head and is electronically operated. The doctor will scrap away the areas you wish to smooth out—which may be the entire face—while you are under local anesthesia or, in severe cases, general anesthesia. Once completed you will be sent home feeling quite sore and swollen. After a few days, your skin will begin to scab over. Once the scab falls off, you’ll be left with a bright pink new layer of skin. This pinkness will fade over about three months, and you will need to protect your skin from the sun for about six months to a year to ensure proper healing and the return of proper pigment. And there you have it! These are some of the best ways to battle aging at its source. By reversing or preventing sun damage, you eliminate those tell-tale wrinkles and lines that signify aging. 27. Chapter 7 – Non-Surgical Anti-Aging Procedures Sometimes the conventional treatments are not enough, and you have to take it one step further to really achieve the results you want. If you have deep-set lines or wrinkles, blotchy skin or feel as though you’re just looking more tired than normal, there are some great non-surgical procedures available that can spruce up your skin and make you look and feel younger! The following are just a few of the procedures you can consider: Botox An injectable form of botulinum toxin, Botox is a cosmetic product that is injected into the skin where areas of wrinkles are present. It works by blocking impulses sent by the nerves and paralyzes the muscles that cause wrinkles and expression lines. Your skin will appear much more smoother and younger after a treatment. It is administered on an outpatient basis and has only temporary effects. Restylane Restylane comes in an injection form and is administered to areas that have wrinkles or could be better smoothed out, such as around the mouth or the eyes. This drug is made of hyaluronic acid, a completely natural product that is present in all living things. It is injected directly under the skin and will act to “plump up” the area in order for it to appear smoother. Treatments will need to be repeated every six months or so. Radiance Also going by the name of Radiesse, Radiance skin treatment is another injectable treatment wherein small particles of Calcium Hydroxylapatite, a naturally occurring substance in the body found in bones, is injected. The substance combines with your own tissues in order to create a perfectly contoured result that matches your skin. Results last between 1-2 years. Juvederm Juvederm is a dermal filler that contains higher levels of hyaluronic acid than other products out on the market. When injected under the skin, it runs smoothly 27 http://WellnessNow.ga

  28. as a gel, which better allows it to shape to the contours of your face. It is also said to be less painful than some other injection-based filler treatments. Thermage Thermage lasts for about two years and works by stimulating the growth of collagen under the skin—the substance that keeps you looking fresh and young, not wrinkly and old. It is an outpatient procedure and uses radiofrequency technology in order to stimulate a healing response from the deeper layers of skin and thus increases collagen production. Intense Pulsed Light PhotoFacials A non-invasive procedure, intense pulsed light photofacials help to erase the damage from sun exposure, the aging process and some skin conditions such as Rosacea. Your skin is exposed to a special light that helps to even out pigment and the texture of the skin. It will often take more than one treatment to achieve your desired level of results. Laser MicroPeels A laser micropeel is essentially like a chemical peel without the chemicals. The laser penetrates only to a certain depth in the skin in order to provide deep exfoliation and increased collagen production—two things that are vital to younger looking skin. You see, there are tons of different treatments to choose from in your quest to create a healthier, younger looking you. Talk with your doctor about the treatments that best suit your needs. 28 http://WellnessNow.ga

  29. Chapter 8 – Surgical Anti-Aging Procedures People tend to try to avoid surgery as much as possible. After all, it is invasive and can cause quite an upheaval in your lifestyle. However, if you are simply unhappy with how you look and wish the years of worry and stress would just melt away, surgery may be the right option for you. There are several different types of surgeries that can be performed to increase the vibrancy of your skin and overall face. A few of your options are outlined below: Face Lift The technical name for a face lift is a rytidectomy and it basically involves the pulling back of the skin in order to tighten sagging skin and smooth out deep-set wrinkles. A face lift can easily make you look several years younger, although it requires general anesthesia and can have a lengthier recovery time. Brow Lift A brow lift is like a face lift except that only the eyebrows are lifted. Sometimes when people age, they develop deep lines in their forehead or a brow that tends to sag over the eye. With a brow lift, you can look younger, more wide-eyed and alert. It does require general anesthesia, however, so be sure to discuss all of your options with your doctor. Eye Lift An eye lift involves the lift of the area around the eye and/or the upper lid itself. Sometimes the upper eyelid can become droopy with age, giving your eyes a lackluster appearance. With an eye lift, you can look alert and bright as well as get rid of those crow’s feet that plague so many people. Results last much longer than non-surgical treatments, however, care should be taken considering recovery time is longer and you will need general anesthesia during the procedure. These are just a sampling of what’s available when it comes to facial plastic surgery. These treatments can wash year away from your face and leave you looking and feeling much younger! 29 http://WellnessNow.ga
