  1. Psalm 119:97-104 “You’ve never struggled with addiction!” “You have more money, so you can’t understand my difficulties!” “You grew up in the church, I didn’t!” “You’ve never experienced prejudice!”

  2. Do you have to personally experience a problem to understand its solution? • Each of our loves are unique. • I’m sure I can find something I dealt with that you have not. • And the other way around as well. • BUT does it matter? • TRUTH exists independent of the individual • It does not depend on the messenger

  3. How Christ Was Treated • From the wrong part of the country – John 1:41,46 • Wrong ethnicity - John 4:9 • No education – John 7:15 • No one important listens to him – John 7:48 • Not old enough – John 8:57 • Hangs out with the wrong crowd – Matthew 9:11 • No one special – Matthew 13:55

  4. What does it take to understand sin? • Do you have to experience the exact same temptation, or does understanding the nature of sin and how it work suffice? • Sin is common to man – 1 Corinthians 10:13 • The nature of sin is defined for us – James 1:13-16; 1 John 2:15,16 • And the Bible is filled with examples- 1 Corinthians 10:6,11

  5. Do you have to believe in something to understand its flaws? • Roman Catholics: “I pray that some day you may have the opportunity get the actual answers you seek and begin to understand the fullness of the Christians faith in His church. Until then, please stop criticizing what you do not understand and interpret to be true.”

  6. Do you have to believe in something to understand its flaws? • Was it wrong for the prophets to condemn idolatry since they didn’t worship idols? – Isaiah 44:9-11 • Does it mean Isaiah didn’t really understand idolatry? • The truth is that the idolaters did not understand – Isaiah 44:12-20

  7. Do you have to know everything before you can say you understand & believe? • Imagine: “I don’t understand quantum mechanics, so therefore I don’t believe in chemistry.” • That is how some people treat religion. • Christians are expected to grow – 1 Peter 2:1-3

  8. “You don’t understand” is an excuse to avoid listening to truth • Let’s be willing to accept truth, regardless of WHO delivers it – Ephesians 5:14-17 NKJV 14 Therefore He says: "Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light." 15 See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
