Oceanography Course Description The purpose of this course is to develop an understanding of the chemical, biological, physical, and geological nature and processes of the earth’s oceans. Life on Earth depends on the ocean’s contribution to the necessities for life. Ocean phytoplankton produce 90% of the Earth’s oxygen. Most of our weather and most of our precipitation is generated over the ocean.
Oceanography Course Description Over 97% of the water on Earth is in in the ocean. Vital food chains begin in the ocean. GS 108 is a one quarter survey course in oceanography. This 4 credit course may be included as a part of a three quarter sequence in physical science for college transfer degree credit. Student learning assignments, student journal, and two exams fulfill the lecture portion. A two day field trip with journal and observation reports satisfies the course lab requirement.

Student Learning Journal Make frequent written journal entries w/ source, information & personal response or comment. Make this useful to you, exam study notes, etc Make dated entries for: • Text book - notes on info. for exam prep • Videos - highlights you wish to remember • Web sites - address, summary & comments • Field Trip - observations, notes, & comments
Journal & Observation Records IMPORTANT FOR GRADING: 1. Sign up for the required 2 day coast field trip. Do Field Observation Records & Journal entries. 2. Bring your Learning Journal with you to use for help on questions during the Exams. 3. Your Learning Journal, Internet summaries, and Coast Trip Journal and Observation Records, and will be graded by the instructor during the Exam.
Oregon Coast Field Trip • Required trip by personal vehicles • Oregon Coast Trip: Tillamook to Newport (capes, beaches, fossils, tide pools, etc. • Follow Roadguide & Map to meet Instructor at pre-planed study sites at set times. • Details for trip by e-mail or by a handout at Mid-term Exam. I.e. Date, time to meet at Tillamook Cheese Factory, what to take. • Make your lodging arrangements before trip.
Coast Trip Journal • Make Field Trip Journal entries at each site. • Do Observation Records at 4 sites • 1. Cape Mears - coast and shore birds • 2. Cape Lookout - disappearing shore and berm • 3. Lincoln City tide pools - sea plants and …..animals living in the tide pools and on rocks • 4. Moolack Beach - Sketch Astoria Formation & …...identify fossils you collected loose on beach • Describe your favorite part(s) of the Coast Trip. • Hand in Trip Journal at Moolack Beach or Final.
Mid-term and Final Exams • Most test questions will be over text- book content and application of same. • Some questions will come from videos. • Mid-qtr Exam: Mon 7:00 pm -8:30 pm Covers Chap. 1-7 & scheduled videos • Final Exam: Mon at 7:00pm - 8:30 pm Covers Chap. 8-12 & scheduled videos See Course Schedule for dates for the Mid-qtr & Final Exams. If you have a Mon. class conflict arrange ahead of time with the instructor for a time to take the Exam in Student Services dept.
Projects for Extra credit Pre-arrange with the instructor for projects: 1. Photo Essay - Oregon Coast themes: “Tide Pool Life”, “Estuary Environment”, “Winter Beaches”, “Coast Geology”, etc (10% ex credit) (Essay with Journal & Observation Records replaces 2 day Coast Field Trip if impossible for you to go.) 2. Oceanography In The News - Clip daily news articles for 5 to 6 weeks. Arrange in themes with headings in a notebook. (Worth up to 10% extra credit. Turn in at an Exam)
