  1. Software Defined Networking Research Group(SDNRG) IAB Breakfast 01 Aug 2013 David Meyer & Nick Feamster

  2. Scope • Classification of SDN models • Definitions • Taxonomies • Relationship to work ongoing in the IETF and other related groups • ETSI NfV, ONF, ORNC OpenDaylight, … • Use cases • SDN model scalability and applicability • Structure Complexity • Other properties • Logically centralized controller • Implications of the lost of control plane/data plane fate sharing • CAP theorem implications for “logically centralized” controllers • Multi-layer programability and feedback control systems • Network description languages, abstractions, interfaces and compilers • Methods and mechanisms for (on-line) verification of correct operation of network/node function. • Security

  3. Meetings • IETF 84 • IETF 85 • IETF 86 • Planned: SIGCOMM

  4. Charter

  5. Long Story Short on the Charter • High Level Goal: Help frame the research agenda for the SDN community • Provide a forum for discussion of SDN issues important to both the academic and engineering communities • Bidiectional information flow • Produce relevant documents (as outlined in the charter) • Not necessarily RFCs • Seeking participation from/with both the academic and engineering communities • Connect with other related groups including IETF, ETSI NFV, ONF, ONRC, SIGCOMM, Upperside, … • http://irtf.org/sdnrg

  6. BTW, my view: SDNContinuum Service Layers Apps Apps May be repeated (stacked or recursive) … Control and Orchestration (overly simplified view) OL/SDN Properties: -- Retains existing (simplified) Control Planes -- Programmable overlay control plane -- Examples: Various Overlay technologies CP/SDN Properties: -- Retains existing (distributed) Control Planes -- Programmable control plane -- Examples: PCE, I2RS,BGP-LS, vendor SDKs FP/SDN Properties: -- Complete Separation of CP and FP -- Centralized Control -- Open Interface/programmable Forwarding Plane -- Examples: OF, ForCES, various control platforms Physical and Virtual Resources (CSN)

  7. Q&A Thanks!
