  6. Why Study Statistics? • The Numerical information is everywhere: Some Examples: • In 2001, the typical household income in the United States was 42,228$. For households in the Northeast the typical income was 45,716$, 43,834$ in the Midwest, 38,904$ in the south, and 45,087$ in the west Probabilistic and Statistical Techniques

  7. Why Study Statistics? • The Numerical information is everywhere: Some Examples: • The National Coffee Association found 54% of the adult population drinks coffee every day. Men drink an average of 1.9 cups per day and women 1.4. Probabilistic and Statistical Techniques

  8. Why Study Statistics? • The Statistical Techniques are used to make decisions that affect our daily lives. Some Examples: • Insurance companies use statistical analysis to set rates for home, automobile, life and health insurance. Tables are available that summarize the probability that a 25-year old women will survive the next year. On the basis of these probabilities, life insurance premiums can be establishes. Probabilistic and Statistical Techniques

  9. Why Study Statistics? • The Statistical Techniques are used to make decisions that affect our daily lives. Some Examples: • Medical researchers study the cure rates of diseases using different drugs and different forms of treatment. For example, if you take an aspirin each day, does that reduce your risk of a heart attack? Probabilistic and Statistical Techniques

  10. Why Study Statistics? No matter what your career, you will make professional decisions that involve data. An understanding of statistical methods will help you make these decisions more effectively. Probabilistic and Statistical Techniques

  11. How to Succeed in Statistics • Attend all lectures • Take notes in lectures • Read the textbook • Read chapters more than once. • Do extra problems • Seek help from your instructor. Probabilistic and Statistical Techniques
