Case Study: Water Hammer! • A Plant was experiencing pipe failures, due to water hammer in the piping system, cracked joints, & loud noises, which were disrupting production. • Dr. Knock was called in to help this plant. Due to the unique construction of Dr. Knock, the switch was zip tied to the piping system, no cutting of pipe. The spans were set and Dr. Knock went to work closing a switch contact every time water hammer was detected, alerting the plant pump system operators.
Case Study: Remote Detection Relief Valve Opening • A number of relief valves were located in a prep plant in a very remote area. The plant operators were concerned that the process could be venting and they would not be aware that gases were escaping. • Dr. Hiss was called in to help here. Again, no pipe sections were cut into. Using hose clamps, Dr. Hiss was secured to the outsides of the pipes adjacent to the outlet side of the valves. The switches were supplied a 10 to 32 VDC, the span set, and alarmed immediately if any of the relief valves vented.
Case Study: Pump Failure on Slurry Line. • A Slurry Line that empties into a settling pond would fail on occasion, causing the slurry not to be extracted properly from the process, and shutting down production. • Dr. Flow was pressed into service. Dr. Flow was located near the discharge end of the pipe to the pond. He was secured with 2 pipe clamps, supplied the 10-32VDC, and set about the task of waiting to alarm if the flow stopped. Again, a non-invasive approach with a simple clamp installation.
Case Study: Notification of Loss of Lubrication • Wheel Bearings on large 25-ton overhead cranes in a steel plant were failing because of lack of lubrication. • Dr. Rumble was contacted to help out here. The switches were mounted on the bearing housings. As the bearings began to experience increased friction, the switch alerted the operator of the condition and the oilers were contacted to lube the bearings.
General Technical Specifications For Dr. X • Dr. X Switches are designed to run on a 10 to 32 VDC Signal. • With the exception of Dr. Click, all of the Doctors come with normally open contacts, voltage free. • All of the doctors come with a red/green LED to indicate the status of the switch. • Operating Range: -25 Deg C to 85 Deg C -7 Deg F to 185 Deg F
General Technical Specifications For Dr. X • Size: 18mm x 53mm x 97mm. • Environmental Rating: IP 65 Nema 4X • Body Material: Injection Molded Nylon 66. • Mounting: Flange with Gasket, 2 Screws or Studs.
These units are designed to function when you are not there! • For example, if you take vibration readings every 60 days, what do you do the other 59 days to insure your equipment is running properly? • A simple, inexpensive switch is an excellent solution!
Failure Modes In Equipment • With the exception of a sudden fatigue failure, most machinery fails over a long period of time. • Experienced operators often times can feel or hear that a particular machine is not operating as it once did. • The operators of the equipment sense something is out of the ordinary.
Dr X Switches • If you carefully look at their design and applications, they are a mechanical way to look at how a particular failure is developing. • A mechanical way to feel, to hear, to sense how that machine is operating, as related to it’s steady state condition. • As change develops, the Doctors close a set of contacts to warn you of that change.
