  2. Effects of Latitude and Climate • Weather: condition of the atmosphere at a specific place and time • Climate: average weather conditions in an area, including temperature and precipitation • Latitude: distance north or south of the equator

  5. Terrestrial Biomes • Biomes are classified according to the characteristics of: • plants, • animal species, • temperature, • precipitation

  6. TUNDRA • South of polar ice caps in North America, Europe, Siberia and Asia (Northern Hemisphere) • Treeless; permanently frozen soil called permafrost • Temperature Range: -34 to 12 degrees C • Animals: caribou, polar bears, birds, insects, wolves, salmon, trout • Plants: short grass and shrubs • Abiotic Factors: soggy summers, cold and dark most of the year

  8. BOREAL FOREST • South of tundra in North America, Europe, and Asia • Evergreen Forests • AKA: Northern Coniferous Forest or Taiga • No permafrost Layer • Temperature: -54 to 21 degrees C • Plants: spruce and fir, some deciduous trees, small trees • Animals: birds, moose, beavers, deer, wolverine, mountain lions • Abiotic Factors: short, moist summers; long cold dry winters

  9. Temperate Forest • Southeastern Canada, eastern US, most of Europe, parts of Asia, and Australia • Mostly deciduous trees • Temperature Range: - 30 to 30 degrees C • Plants: Oak, beech, and maple trees, shrubs, grasses • Animals: squirrels, rabbits, skunks, birds, deer, foxes, black bears • Abiotic factors: well-defined seasons, hot summers, cool winters

  11. Temperate Woodland/Shrubland • Surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, west coasts of North and South America, South Africa and Australia • Temperature: 10 to 40 degrees C • Plants: evergreen shrubs and small trees • Animals: foxes, jackrabbits, birds, bobcats, coyotes, lizards, snakes, butterflies • Abiotic Factors: hot and dry summers; cold and wet winters

  13. Temperate Grassland • North America, South America, Asia, Africa, Australia • A.K.A.: In NA Praries; SA pampas, llanos, cerrados; Africa savannas, velds; Australia rangelands • Temp: -40 to 38 degrees C • Plants: Grasses and herbs • Animals: gazelle, bison, horses, lions, deer, mice, coyotes, foxes, wolves, birds, quail, snakes, grasshoppers, spiders • Abiotic Factors: hot summers, cold winters, moderate rainfall, fires possible

  14. The Lion King!!! http://www.lionking.org/imgarchive/?Miscellaneous_Images+hi http://www.lionking.org/imgarchive/Miscellaneous_Images/VideoCover.jpg

  15. Desert • Every continent EXCEPT Europe • Temp: High 20 to 49 Degrees C; Low -18 to -10 degrees C • Plants: cacti, Joshua Trees, succulents • Animals: lizards, bobcats, birds, tortoises, rats, antelopes, desert toads • Abiotic: varying temps; low rainfall

  17. Tropical Savanna • Africa, South America, Austrailia • Other part of “Lion King” • Temp 20 to 30 degrees C • Plants: grasses and scattered trees • Animals: lions, hyenas, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, zebras • Abiotic: summers hot and rainy; winters cool and dry

  23. Other Terrestrial Regions • Regions that do not fit into a biome definition • Mountains • Polar Regions

  24. Mountains • Conditions change as elevation increases • Temperature decreases, Precipitation changes form • Biotic Communities also change with increasing altitude

  25. Polar Regions • Borders TUNDRA at high latitudes • Cold all year • Antarctica, Greenland, Arctic Ocean • Animals: Penguins, whales, seal, fish, krill, polar bears, arctic foxes • No plants; frozen land; lots of ice and snow
