Social Policy RECAP on previous session
It is a human rights treaty ratified by national, and bound by international Law. What is the UNCRC?
The UN committee on the Rights of the Child received reports on an annual basis from member countries. This committee is made up of member countries Who ensures that it is implemented
20th November 1989 It came into force on 2nd September 1990 When did the CRC come into place.
Currently there are 194 countries. Who has signed up to the UNCRC?
Somalia, South Sudan and the USA. Can you name the 3 countries that have not ratified the UNCRC?
The UNCRC does not have anything different than the UDHR but it was agreed that Children being children were not able to access these rights and so there needed to be separate legislation. It is up the Government, Parents and Adults everywhere to make sure Children can access their rights. We are the custodians of Children’s rights Why a separate convention for children?
Decide in small groups if the cards are representing articles in the UNCRC What’s in the UNCRC?
Parents see it as interfering – mistrust of the UN (Europeans telling us what do to !) It would over ride American Law Children would have a choice to “opt in” to sex education and “alternative world views” Children would have a right to choose their own religion and Children should believe what their parents believe Why won’t the USA sign up to the UNCRC?
As a qualified youth worker/minister, what are some of the implication the UNCRC will have on your practice?
