  1. Avatar: • In Hinduism, an avatar is a deliberate descent of a deity to earth, or a descent of the Supreme Being • (i.e., Vishnu for Vaishnavites), and is mostly translated into English as "incarnation", but more accurately as "appearance" or "manifestation". • In computing, an avatar is the graphical representation of the user or the user's alter ego or character. • It may take either a three-dimensional form, as in games or virtual worlds, or a two-dimensional form as an icon in Internet forums and other online communities. The term "avatar" can also refer to the personality connected with the screen name, or handle, of an Internet user. • Alter-ego: • (Latin, "the other I") • a second self • distinct from a person's normal or original personality. • A person who has an alter ego is said to lead a double life. The term appeared in common usage in the early 19th century when dissociative identity disorderwas first described by psychologists. The Alter-ego and the Avatar

  12. Brainstorming: Answer these questions in your sketchbook • Who is your “other self”? Your alter-ego? What would be your avatar? • What self do you want to portray/show? • How do you think of yourself? • Do you represent yourself as/with animal(s)? Or as hobbies/objects related to hobbies? Do you imagine yourself as different from how you are? • Who do you want to be? OR Who do you wish you weren’t? Is there a side of yourself that you want to improve? Is there a side of yourself that you’re afraid of? • How can you show this? • Facial expressions/ body language • Symbols: • Animals, objects • Colors that are meaningful or evoke an emotion Divide a sketchbook page into 4: make four small sketches of yourself as different alter-egos. These do not have to be finished: all four should be started (basic proportions sketched in) by the end of class. Write words that describe these parts of yourself in the background of each sketch. HW: work on all four sketches: choose your favorite one to “finish” (apply shading and details) By Dilemma on Shadowness.com
