Greatest Responsibilities
The Duties of Husbands commanded to... * Love their wives * Respect their wives * Support their wives
The Duties of Wives commanded to... * Submit to their husbands * Love their husbands * Manage the home
God’s purpose for marriage is to create families in which children have the benefit of parents who provide the best upbringing possible. For this to occur, parents must fulfill their duties
This is serious business. • This is nothing to take lightly • This could mean life or death both physically and spiritually • If not US, who? • Are we going to let the world train our kids? • Are we going to let Hollywood or professional athletes? • Are we going to let our politicians and industrial leaders? • Are we going to let our liberal educators?
God’s Way • Courage • Strength • Make Hard Decisions • Not Popular
STAND FIRM As Dads and Moms
THE DUTIES OF FATHERS A)Providers 2Co 12:14 “Now for the third time I am ready to come to you. And I will not be burdensome to you; for I do not seek yours, but you. For the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.”
THE DUTIES OF FATHERS • This does not mean we get them everything they want. • This does not mean we go into bankruptcy to provide for them But we are to provide for them. Feed them, cloth them, protect them Give them stability
THE DUTIES OF FATHERS 1Ti 5:8 “But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” (Infidel)
THE DUTIES OF FATHERS B) NOT PROVOKE CHILDREN TO WRATH Ep 6:4 “And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.” Col 3:21 “Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.”
*Unreasonable commands *Needless severity *Themanifestation of anger *Continually finding fault with them *Unrealistic expectations *Punishment that does not fit the crime *Publicly humiliation
THE DUTIES OF FATHERS C) PROVIDE LOVING DISCIPLINE He 12:6-10 “For whom the Lord loves He chastens,And scourges every son whom He receives.”If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? 8 But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness.”
THE DUTIES OF FATHERS Heb 12:11;“Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” Pro 13:24“He who spares his rod hates his son,But he who loves him disciplines him promptly.”
WE must and should discipline our children but we should always follow up that discipline with an “I love you” or “God has made me responsible for you and it’s my job.”
THE DUTIES OF FATHERS D) PROVIDE SPIRITUAL TRAINING Ps 78:4-6 “We will not hide them from their children, Telling to the generation to come the praises of the Lord,And His strength and His wonderful works that He has done. 5 For He established a testimony in Jacob,And appointed a law in Israel,Which He commanded our fathers,That they should make them known to their children;6 That the generation to come might know them,The children who would be born,That they may arise and declare them to their children,”
Jos 24:14-15 14 “Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord! 15 And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Discipleship Journal “When the father is an active believer, there is about a seventy-five 75%percent likelihood that the children will also become active believers. But if only the mother is a believer, this likelihood is dramatically reduced to fifteen percent 15%.”
THE DUTIES OF MOTHERS A) LOVE THEIR CHILDREN Tit 2:4 “that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,”
THE DUTIES OF MOTHERS B) MANAGE THEIR HOUSEHOLDS Tit 2:5 “to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.” 1Ti 5:14 “Therefore I desire that the younger widows marry, bear children, manage the house, give no opportunity to the adversary to speak reproachfully.”
THE DUTIES OF MOTHERS Pr 31:10-31Virtuous woman For her worth is far above rubies. 11 The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain. 12 She does him good and not evil All the days of her life. And willingly works with her hands 15 She also rises while it is yet night, 16 She considers a field and buys it;From her profits she plants a vineyard. And provides food for her household, 17 She girds herself with strength, And strengthens her arms. 18And her lamp does not go out by night.
19 She stretches out her hands to the distaff,And her hand holds the spindle. 20 She extends her hand to the poor, Yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy. 21 She is not afraid of snow for her household,For all her household is clothed with scarlet.22 She makes tapestry for herself; Her clothing is fine linen and purple.23 Her husband is known in the gates,When he sits among the elders of the land.24 She makes linen garments and sells them,And supplies sashes for the merchants.
25 Strength and honor are her clothing; She shall rejoice in time to come. 26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, And on her tongue is the law of kindness. 27 She watches over the ways of her household, 28 Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her: 30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.
