Australian Federation Presentation By Alex Harrison 6C
First The Facts Facts Facts Australian Federation was wanted by many for years but almost all the state premiers disagreed with the statements from the public and even some of the other premiers. Australian colonies where strict and the borders where patrolled day and night for people crossing through to trade. You would have to be checked for any dangerous items illegal food etc. These strict rules caused a serious barrier in every community, they all wanted to be just with their colony and no one else. Men had the most power back then women where demoralized and put in there place unable to vote until the late 20th century. These rights also included native Australians who had no right to have any land. • Federation began in1901 and was a very significant time as Australia became one colony/country. • This all took place in Sydney at a meeting of the state premiers. This meeting was to be based around six colonies freely trading between them and also strengthening the defence with one large unit. • Many argued that this would be a positive step for Australasia (Australia). • Alfred Deakin became the first Australian prime minister after a series of votes. • At the time of the votes, Native Australian’s had no rights meaning they could not vote.
Sir Henry Parkes Sir Henry Parkes played a huge part in Federation in Australia. He was born in 1815 on the 27th of May in Warwickshire Britain and died on the 27th of April 1896 in Sydney. Sir Henry Parkes believed in Fair Trade rights fare before it was finally granted. As the state premier of NSW he spoke his mind and was a strong character. People saw him as a leader because of his persistence and organization. He organized many state meetings to discuss the issues he put on the table. In 1996 The museum of Victoria put the one and only silver coin, engraved with Sir Henry Parkes Face on display for the Public to see. Sir Henry Parkes is an Australian Icon.
Alfred Deakin Alfred Deakin was the official first Australian prime minister of Australia and was one of the longest serving politician. Alfred Deakin was born on the 3rd of August 1856 in Collingwood Victoria , Melbourne and died on the 7th of October 1919. Alfred Deakin Helped in the establishment of the liberal party in the Victorian colony. He was also the first ever Australian prime minister. Alfred Deakin also studied law but after an unsuccessful career he became interested in Parliament. Alfred Deakin after serving from 1901 to 1915 became mentally ill and his state worsened as the illness progressed. Despite his frame of mind Alfred Deakin had all the love and support he could have ever asked for. He is also an Australian icon.
Why Was Federation Founded? Federation was founded because of the growing economy and the increasing amount of trading that was going on between states, another issue that could also only be fixed with Federation was the defence forces that where in desperate need of some serious upgrades. Now days we take these things for granted, having every one in our country happy and with free will and rights, people being accepted for who they are, women being able to voice their opinions and be a member of society and having one large strong and willing defence for to serve and protect our country. Back before Federation in Australia not every state had an opinion in each major decision , not every community had the same rights as others and the list goes on. That is why Federation was founded.
THE AUSTRALIAN MAP IN FEDERATION TIMES Back before the Federation era Australia was many complex states due to there being no socialization between each state.
What Is Federation? • Federation was founded in 1901. • Federation is the era of all the colonies uniting and forming one. • When the decision was made to have Federation that meant they had one leader and one decision maker. • This decision formed the happy country we live in today. • Even though Federation was founded that doesn’t mean everyone was happy • Most indigenous Australians still had no rights and lived this way for many years to come.
Partners In Crime Sir Henry Parkes and Sir Edmund Barton I believe as ‘partners in crime’ because of there partnership in making Federation a reality. Sir Edmund Barton: occupation, lawyer and a part of state parliament. Sir Henry Parkes: occupation, NSW state premier and Federal supporter
