Location • The epicentre (the point on the earth’s surface directly above the Hypocentre) was located about 11.8 miles northeast of Muzaffarabad and 65 miles northeast of Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan. • The Hypocentre was located 16.2 miles below the surface. • The earthquake occurred on October 8th, 2005 and had a magnitude of 7.6 on the Richter scale.

Causes • The earthquake was the direct result of a collision between the destructive plate boundary of the Indian and the Eurasian plates, the plates that are also responsible for the formation of the Himalayan mountains. There has always been unstable seismic in that area. • This map shows the direction of the Indian plate, against the Eurasian plate.

Consequences 80,000 deaths (79,000 from Pakistan, 1,400 in Kashmir, 4 in Afghanistan) 106,000+ injured Students trapped under collapsed school buildings 3.3 million homes destroyed – 3.5 million people left homeless Landslides and trees collapsed Broken sewerage pipes contaminated water supplies and spread dissease

Emergency Response • Countries, international organizations and non-governmental organizations offered aid • Given through donations, pledges, supplies (food, medical, tents, blankets) • The army and emergency services arrived to join the rescue effort • WHO sent 100 000 doses of anti-tetanus medicine • Virgin Atlantic brought 55 tons of resources for the affected by the earthquake • Total financial aid: 5.8 billion USD • Schools and hospitals were rebuilt • Building regulations were improved to reduce damage in future earthquakes
