EPICS Food: Monday, 2.8.10 Digestive System: Structure & Functions • Homework: • Fill out the preference sheet for project topics & partners • You may want to do a bit of web research on the topics you’re interested in before ranking your preferences • Do Now: • Hand in the Heart/Artery Questions • Think back to 9th grade bio… what’s the difference between MECHANICAL or PHYSICAL digestion versus CHEMICAL digestion? • Today’s Objectives: • Extract scientific information from a variety of textbook sources • Trace the path of food molecules through the digestive system
Where We’re Going Next • Brief review (2 days) of Digestive System (recall 9th grade digestion project…) • Small-group projects/presentations exploring an aspect of human body systems in more depth • Larger up-coming projects: • Team project: Develop and present a lesson combining food, cooking, and an aspect of human health • Most likely for middle school children at Margaret Fuller House • Individual final project on Human Body Systems & Food • Story, picture book, or pamphlet… will allow creativity!

Functions of the Digestive System • Break down food into small enough pieces that it can be absorbed into the bloodstream • Mechanical/physical digestion: breaks food chunks into smaller pieces • Ex: bagel bagel crumbs • Chemical digestion: breaks large molecules into small molecules • Ex: starch glucose • Release waste/un-digestible materials
Today’s Agenda & Goals • Work in groups to take notes on an assigned section of the digestive system. Group 1: BSCS book, Mouth – Stomach Group 2: BSCS book, Small Intestine – Anus Group 3: Dragonfly book, Mouth – Stomach Group 4: Dragonfly book, Small Intestine – Anus • Jigsaw – Split into new groups to share the info you’ve found. Goals: • Extract info from textbooks and compare sources • Follow the path of food molecules through the entire digestive system
EPICS Food: Tuesday, 2.9.10 Digestive System: Structure & Functions • Homework: • Mini-Reflection on Digestive System – See assignment sheet for the specific prompts – but due FRIDAY not Thursday! • Do Now: • Make sure you have nothing in your mouth. If you’ve just eaten/drank something other than water, go get a quick drink. • Take a very small bite of cracker and gently chew it, keeping it near the front of your tongue. Squish it around in your mouth for a minute or two (again, keep it near the front of your tongue). Pay attention to the taste – does it change over time? • Today’s Objective: • Identify the structures and functions of the major organs in the digestive system • Trace the path of food molecules through the digestive system
