In February 2003, the Department of Mathematics at the University of Arizona held a conference titled: Mathematics Education and Mathematics in the 21st Century: The Roles of Outreach, Teacher Preparation, and Research on Teaching & Learning in a Research I Mathematics Department
The organizers argued the evolution of mathematics education in a Research Intensive Mathematics Department occurs in four stages: • Reaffirming the Department’s overall teaching mission • Taking on outreach projects in the community • Strengthening its teacher preparation programs • Providing stability, vitality, and continuity for quality teaching efforts, outreach projects and teacher preparation programs
Fifteen years ago the UNL Department of Mathematics: • Had a very traditional approach to the Department’s research and teaching mission • All mathematics education was located in the Teachers College • Had a strong core of outstanding teachers – for whom teaching was a private matter • Was home to the American Mathematics Competitions – but it was largely viewed as a separate entity that had little impact on life within the Department
Cultural change took place over the next decade by engaging faculty with activities in which they were most likely to be interested. These included: • Regular efforts to nominate faculty and graduate students for teaching awards • An expansion of opportunities for honors instruction • Professional development opportunities for graduate students • Calculus reform • Outreach centered on math camps for young people Once change occurred, faculty were proud of the results and became more interested in mathematics education activities
GOAL To be a model for a department of mathematics in a research university where educational goals are integral to the departmental mission and are supported by broadly based participation in educational programs.
Youth Programs • American Mathematics Competitions • JUMP (JUnior Mathematics Prognosis Test) • UNL Math Day • All Girls/All Math • Power Math
Undergraduate Initiatives in Math • Honors Mathematics • 15 classes; 350 students per year • University-wide Departmental Teaching Award • 17 of 29 tenured faculty have won College/University Teaching Awards • 5 graduate students have won a campus-wide award for outstanding teaching • UCARE/REU supplements • Nebraska Conference for Undergraduate Women in Mathematics

Teacher Education at UNLThe Mathematics Semester Currently, all Elementary Education Majors participate in the Mathematics Semester: • A 10-hour block of courses that links Math 300 (Number & Number Sense) with two methods courses and a field experience as part of a mathematician – math educator partnership to strengthen the mathematics education of future teachers at UNL
Institutional Support • Nebraska Math and Science Initiative • Center for Science, Mathematics and Computer Education • A&S Math/Science Education Area of Strength • Math & Science Teachers for the 21st Century
