Perhaps the biggest issue in birthday party etiquette is that of inviting kids in a class. Is it OK to send invitations to just a few kids? Or does the whole class need to be invited?
Some schools employ a rule where kids can’t send out invitations at school unless all class members are invited to the party. While this rule protects children from disappointment, it also creates problems for parents. Some parents may not be able to afford a large party, or have time to send invited to children outside of school.
The situation is obviously a tricky one. Not inviting kids has led to many phone calls home from disgruntled parents, and created divisions between kids that wouldn’t have existed otherwise. However, at some point in a child’s life, they’re going to have to learn to deal with disappointment.
