  1. NOAA's National Geodetic Survey (NGS) Defines and manages a geographic coordinate system. This network, the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS), provides the foundation for transportation and communication; mapping and charting; and a multitude of scientific and engineering applications.

  2. Geodesy: • The science concerned with determining the size and shape of the Earth and the location of points upon its surface. • NGS develops Federal standards for geodetic surveys and helps to coordinate surveying methods.

  3. Geographic Coordinate System • Coordinate system that enables every location on the Earth to be specified by a set of numbers. A common choice of coordinates is latitude, longitude, and elevation.

How to Locate Bench Marks: Step 1: Visit http://www.geocaching.com Step 2: Select “Find a Bench Mark” on lower right side of webpage Step 3: Type in zip code in postal code box Step 4: Select a bench mark you would like to find. Navigate the webpage to find clues about the location. Step 5: Be safe and use common sense when searching.

  6. Additional Learning Activity List of what you will need for credit: 1. Print Original Data Sheet (on geocache.com) 2. Photograph of the Bench Mark (from location) 3. Picture of you standing at the Bench Mark 4. 1 page, typed, double-spaced, 12 pt. font paper of your experience. Include date. Must be error-free!
