What is Teflon? • Also known as POLYTETRAFLUOROETHYLENE. • A tough translucent synthetic resin combined with tetrafluoroethylene. • Made of carbon backbone chain, and each carbon has two fluorine atoms attached to it. • *Tetrafluoroethylene - a dense colorless gas that is polymerized to make plastics. • *Resin - a sticky flammable organic substance, insoluble in water, exuded by some trees and plants.
What is teflon? • Distinguished by its slippery surface, high melting point, and resistance to attack by almost all chemicals.
Who invented teflon? • Teflon was accidentally invented by Roy Plunkett in New Jersey in 1938. It happened while Plunkett attempted to make a new refrigerant, the perfluorethylene polymerized in a pressurized storage container. The iron inside the container acted as a catalyst. • Kinetic Chemicals, a joint venture between DuPont and General Motors, patented it in 1941 and registered the Teflon trademark in 1945.
WHy was it developed? • Provide convenience in cooking. • Because of its durability, it won’t easily react when a chemical hits it. • No oil should be used which makes you save. • Less smoke is brought out when you cook. • Cleaner environment.
What is it used for? • To make non-stick cooking pans, and anything that needs to be slippery or non-stick. • To treat carpets and fabrics to make them stain resistant. • It is also used for medical applications since human bodies rarely reject it, it can be used to make artificial body parts. • Fabricated into industrial products, such as bearings, pipe liners, and parts for valves and pumps.
What is it used for? • It is used for insulation of cables since Teflon is a poor conductor of electricity. • A coating which acts as a resistant to chemical reaction, in non-stick frying pans.
