Globalization, it means: • 1200 KFC Restaurants in China (2004 data); • Starbucks serve moon cakes; • A kid arriving at Houston Airport from Hong Kong • was joyous: “Mom and Dad, they have McDonald’s • here too!” • On a flight to Shanghai, a New Jerseyan offered to • host me any time I visit China. I have his business • card. He owns a factory, and a home in Ningbo; • 400 of the Fortune 500 companies have operations • in China; • Watching an English movie by Jackie Chan, my son • was so amused: Dad, this guy is so funny, he speaks • just like you.

Globalization, it means: • Competition and collaboration, • both for opportunities • You compete, you improve yourselves • (Well, in the long run at least.) • You collaborate, you generate new opportunities Globalization affects not just the way we do business. It affects all aspects of our life. And our education!

Objectives: The Global U8 consortium's purpose is to meet a growing demand for: cross-cultural education through student exchange and the adoption of a common curricula; a response to new challenges posed by the need for Global Logistics, Business Administration, Marine Affairs, and Advanced Technologies (e.g., information technologies, bio-technology, nano-technology) as well as interdisciplinary activities by conducting joint-research and expanding outreach programs; and the need to strengthen global cooperation among university administrations. • University Forum: A university wide eminent speaker series

What shall we do? • Establish student exchange programs • No cost to us • Many benefits • Summer programs • Example of an NSF REU site proposal International Research Experience for Undergraduates in Engineering in Shanghai, China (Z. Lin, ECE; P. Yu, OAAA; D. Johnson, STS) • three year program • 10 students per year • 10 faculty members at SJTU committed to serve as research advisors • 10 Chinese students will be selected to be partners • Other ideas??
