  2. In the beginning… • 1793: Col. John L. Hardenbergh, a veteran of the American Revolution, founded Auburn • Hardenbergh built the first mill on the Owasco Outlet, which fostered the growth of the community. • 1805: Originally known as "Hardenbergh's Corners," soon after the name was changed to "Auburn." • 1806: Col. Hardenbergh dies. His remains and those of his wife are in Auburn's Fort Hill Cemetery, in the Mount Hope Section. • 1815: Auburn became an incorporated village. • 1848: Auburn received its charter as a city.

Hagaman – Auburn’s first major architect • Cayuga County Courthouse 1833-1836 • Horatio Nelson White, 1814-1892 • Designed the clock tower in the center of Auburn • Julius A. Schweinfurth, 1858 – 1931 • Bradley Chapel • Thomas Mott Osborne home • James Street School (now the site of Auburn Post Office Building) • James C. Stout, 1843 -1901 • Willard Memorial chapel/Welch classroom • The Auburn Button Works Factory • Auburn Post Office building

  4. Factories • Wegman Piano Factory, 1882: Owned and operated by the Henry Wegman family. The company was a division of the Estey Piano Corporation. • The Auburn Button Works, early 1900’s: This produced test pressings to Berliner, pressed Zon-O-Phone discs, and an endless supply of custom labels for the International Record Company. • Columbian Rope Company, 1903: Founded by Col. E.D. Metcalf. Col. Metcalf would use his bailer twine operation as leverage to get into the rope industry.

  5. Early Politicians • William H. Seward, 1801-1872: New York State Legislator, Governor of New York (twice), U.S. Senator (NY), Secretary of State for Presidents Lincoln and Johnson. • Cyrus C. Dennis, 1806-1866: First Mayor of the City of Auburn • Christopher Morgan, 1808-1877: New York Secretary of State 1848-1852, Mayor of Auburn 1860 • Sereno Payne, 1843-1912: U.S. Congressman for 30 years. Majority Leader • William Miller Collier, 1867 – 1956: Ambassador to Spain and Chile • John Taber, 1880-1965: U.S. Congressman from 1922-1962 • George R. Metcalf, 1914-2002: State Senator • Jerome Holland, 1916-1985: Ambassador to Sweden, first African American director of the New York Stock Exchange
