  6. INERRANCY OFSCRIPTURE HOW DO WE KNOW THE BIBLE CONTAINS NO MISTAKES?

  7. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE Inerrancy: Freedom from errors or untruths

  8. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE Inerrancy: Scripture always tells the truth, it does not affirm anything that is contrary to fact

  9. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE Inerrancy: Specifically applies to the original manuscripts (autographs)

  10. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE • The syllogism of inerrancy: • Scripture is God’s word • (2 Tim. 3:16-17) • God cannot lie • (Titus 1:2; Heb. 6:18) • Scripture is true • (2 Sam. 7:28; John 17:17)

  11. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE • The Scriptures can be inerrant and yet… • use accommodating language (The sun went down) • use round numbers (7,000 killed instead of 6,899) • use free quotations (Old Testament in the New Testament)

  12. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE Refuting alleged “errors” in Scripture

  13. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE Alleged Error #1: 2 Sam. 10:18 vs. 1 Chron. 19:18 discrepancy in details of battle

  14. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE

  15. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE

  16. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE Solution to alleged error #1: error in transcription- small details such as numbers or the spelling of a name are often the result of a scribal copy error

  17. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE Alleged Error #2: Matt. 27:5 vs. Acts 1:18 discrepancy in details of Judas’ death

  18. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE

  19. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE

  20. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE Solution to alleged error #2: faulty assumption- two writers can include different details of the same event for their own purposes

  21. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE Alleged Error #3: Isaiah 13:10 incorrect science

  22. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE Isaiah 13:10 “For the stars of heaven and their constellations will not flash forth their light; the sun will be dark when it rises and the moon will not shed its light.”

  23. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE Isaiah 13:10 “For the stars of heaven and their constellations will not flash forth their light; the sun will be dark when it rises and the moon will not shed its light.”

  24. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE Solution to alleged error #3: over emphasis on scientificpreciseness- does not take into account phenomenological language (language that speaks from the perspective of the subject)

  25. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE Alleged Error #4: Prov. 12:21 vs. Luke 16:19–22 ideas in opposition to one another

  26. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE

  27. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE Solution to alleged error #4: faulty understanding concerning the nature of a proverb- a proverb is a general truth that does not necessarily apply in every situation

  28. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE Solution to alleged error #4: also, there is a misunderstanding of the ultimate end of both men- the poor man, Lazarus, was the one who ultimately experienced peace, while the rich man experienced calamity after death

  29. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE • Questions: • Does the Bible contain mistakes? • How do we explain the apparent contradictions?

  30. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE Objections to inerrancy: 1. The Bible was written by humans, and humans make mistakes, therefore the Bible cannot be inerrant

  31. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE Objections to inerrancy: 2. Inerrancy only applies to the original manuscripts, and no one has access to the originals, therefore the Bible cannot be inerrant

  32. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE Objections to inerrancy: 3. The Bible contains errors and contradictions, therefore the Bible cannot be inerrant

  33. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE Responses to objections: 1. Although humans can make mistakes this does not mean they must always make mistakes

  34. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE Responses to objections: While it is true that the Bible is a human work, and humans can make mistakes, it is also true that the Bible is a divine work, and God does not make mistakes!

  35. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE Jesus Christ 100% God 100% man Scripture 100% God 100% man

  36. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE Responses to objections: 2. Theologians who study the science of textual criticism state that the Scriptures have been preserved with 95+% accuracy, so that in a sense we have “access” to the originals through diligent study and research

  37. INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE Responses to objections: 3. When the original context and intention of a passage is understood, all alleged errors and contradictions are shown to be based upon either faulty hermeneutics or scribal errors
