Student Learning Objectives • Define agriculture & the agricultural industry • Identify important historical developments in agriculture • Explain major technological developments in agriculture
Agriculture industry Agriculture Agribusiness Aquaculture Biotechnology Domestication Farming Forestry Inventions Natural Resources Ornamental Horticulture Suburban Farming Technology Terms
Objective One Define Agriculture and The Agriculture Industry
What is Agriculture? The science of growing crops and raising animals to meet the needs of humans
What is the Ag Industry? • All activities involved with providing people with food, clothing, and shelter • Includes: • Farm operations • Nonfarm operations • Largest industry in America
Nonfarm Operations? • Referred to as Agribusiness • Agribusiness • Nonfarm work • Two basic areas • Supplies & Services • Marketing & Processing
What are Farming Operations? • Uses land and other resources to grow crops and raise animals • Types: • conventional farming • suburban farming • aquaculture • forestry
Conventional Farming • Large land acreage • Grow typical grains • Corn, soybeans, wheat, and other similar crops • Produce larger numbers of animals • Swine, beef and dairy cattle, and sheep
Suburban Farming • Smaller areas of land • Residential or business locations • Typical products • Vegetable crops and small animals
Aquaculture • “Farming the Water” • Areas: • Raising fish • Tilapia, Bass • Aquatic animals • Shrimp,Crawfish • Aquatic plants • Water cress, water chestnuts
Forestry • Production and use of trees
Other Agriculture Sectors • Ornamental Horticulture • Produce flowers and plants for their beauty • Natural Resources • Working with things found in nature • Soil, water, air
Objective Two Identify Important Historical Developments in Agriculture
Two Important Groups of People That Affected Early Agriculture • Native Americans • Colonists
Native Americans • Early agriculture was: • Hunting and gathering • Indian agriculture: • 7000 B.C. simple farming • 1000 A.D. corn in large plots
Colonists • Learned from Native Americans • Credited with early domestication of animals • The taming, confinement, and breeding of animals for human use
Objective Three Explain major technological developments in agriculture
Technology • Technology - The use of inventions in working & living • Inventions - Any new device or product - A new way of doing work
Technology's Advances • Technology has drastically changed agriculture • Mid 1700s: 90% of people were farmers • Today: 2% of population is involved in production agriculture
History of American Agriculture Farm Machinery and Technology
Early Technological Advances • 1607: Indians show colonists how to grow crops • Corn, pumpkins, squash and beans • 1700s: • Charles Townsend develops the first crop rotations systems • Jethro Tull develops a planting machine
Early Technological Advances • 1793: • Cotton gin is developed by Eli Whitney • 1834: • Cyrus McCormick invents the reaper • 1837: • John Deere designs a one-piece wrought iron plow in Detour, IL
Early Technological Advances • 1800s: • Gregor Mendel discovers the basic principles of heredity • 1850: • Joseph Glidden develops barbed wire • 1862: • Morrill Act creates land-grant universities • USDA is established
Early Technological Advances • 1869: • Transcontinental railroad is completed • 1901: • First successful gasoline engine tractor is built
20th Century Technological Advances • Improved varieties of corn • More resistant to pests & diseases • Development of new chemicals • Control insects, diseases, & weeds • Genetic engineering • Improvement of crops & livestock
20th Century Technological Advances • Computers • Record keeping • Biotechnology • Science to change organisms or their environments • Process to get products from organisms
Review • What is Agriculture? • What is the Agriculture Industry? • What is an example of non-farm operations? • What are the 4 types of farming operations? Provide an example of each. • Who are the 2 groups of people that affected early agriculture? What did they do? • How has technology changed over time in agriculture?
