  3. 1.1 Variables & Expressions • Variable: a letter that represents a value that can change or vary • Coefficient: the number multiplied by the variable • Constant: a number that does not change 30n + 6 • Evaluate: to find the answer • Substitute: to replace a number for a variable

  4. Evaluating expressions • Substitute the number for the variable & solve X + 6 for x = 13 13 + 6 19 2x + 3y for x = 15 and y = 12 2(15) + 3(12) 30 + 36 66

  5. 1.2 Writing Algebraic expressions

  6. Translating word phrases into algebraic expressions A number n decreased by 11 n – 11 Quotient of 3 and a number x 3/x 1 more than the product of 12 and p 1 + 12p 3 times the sum of x and 1 3(x +1)

  7. Joke of the Day A three-year-old had been told several times to get ready for bed. The last time his mom told him, she was every insistent. His response was, "Yes, Sir!" 9. Write an expression & then evaluate • Monica got a 200 minute calling card & called her brother at college. After talking with him for t minutes, she had t less than 200 minutes remaining on her card. Write an expression to determine the number of minutes remaining on the calling card. 200 – t • If Monica talked with her brother for 55 minutes, how many minutes does he have left on her calling card? 200- t 200- 55 145 She has 145 minutes left on her calling card.
