  2. Civil War Gear

  3. Clothing & Shelter • The uniforms the Union wore were made out of wool and were all the same • The South used everyday clothing to fight with because they couldn’t afford to make uniforms • They also had wool blankets that they used as cover under their dog tents.

  4. Blades • They used pikes & lances to fortify their camps. • They put bayonets on their guns and carried sabers on their side • Many carried bowie knives and cutlasses

  5. Guns • The Calvary used carbines but the infantry used regular should rifles. • Handguns were carried by almost everybody • Artillery and mortars provided great support for the infantry when they advanced.

  6. Civil War Diet

  7. South Diet • The South didn’t have much food. • But the food they did have were things like Johnny-cake(variation of hardtack), molasses, cornmeal, and bacon. • They also had salted pork, chicory(variation of coffee), vegetables and rice. • They traded much of their extra food for tobacco when they could.

  8. North Diet • The northern soldiers got rations to last them for three days. • They had hardtack, salted pork, rarely fresh meat, real coffee, and also baked beans • They also had rice and vegetables

  9. Hunger • Hunger was a major concern in the Civil War. • The South did not have great supply lines, so their troops suffered from hunger the most.

  10. Organization

  11. Morning Routine • The day started off at 5a.m., then roll call, then treating the sick, then assigning duties. • They assigned duties only if they were staying in camp, if not they marched.

  12. Drums • Drummer boys played a huge part in the organization of the camp. • They wake up the camp at 5a.m. and announce most of the daily activities.

  13. Duties • The duties would be assigned after roll call was done. • The duties were things like gathering fire wood, guard duty, and clearing fields for drill.

  14. Hardships of the Civil War Soldiers

  15. Inadequate Shelter • Many of the soldiers tents had holes and were raggedy. • They had to carry it on their backs, and when setting up camp, the tents did not provide a lot of shelter.

  16. Terror of Battle • Many days and nights were spent very bored and lonesome. • The absolute terror of battle made up for those long boring nights. • Many feared the thought of battle and how it was so imminent.

  17. Camp life/Marching • Life at camp was filled with boredom for soldiers • Conditions on the march were often harsh • Weather, hunger, terror, exhaustion and boredom are feelings that the soldiers experienced.
