The Philosophy… All students are expected to dress in an appropriate and tasteful manner. The goal at PMS is to create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for an educational setting.
What is our policy? • Shirts/ Blouses • Shirts/Blouses should be constructed so that the top of the shoulder is covered. Sleeveless apparel with a finished edge may be worn if the garment comes to the shoulder edge and has a standard size armhole. • Tank tops, spaghetti straps, tube tops, halter tops, mesh tops, sheer tops, strapless tops, muscle shirts, and backless tops are unacceptable and may NOT be worn.
Shirts/Blouses • Shirts/Blouses must not show inappropriate necklines that expose cleavage, low back lines, midriffs, or undergarments. NO BARE SKIN is to be exposed at the waist, chest or abdomen area. • Necklines cannot be lower than the straight line from the top of the underarm across in a straight line to the opposite underarm. • All shirts / tops must be tucked in or overlap bottom garment (arms stretched out to the side must not expose midriff/undergarments)
Muscle shirts, tank tops, and spaghetti straps are unacceptable.
Shirts/tops that are revealing, low cut, show midriff, or are backless are unacceptable (even if worn under an open shirt, sweater, jacket)
Dresses/Skirts/Skorts/Shorts • Above rules with regard to sleeves and necklines also apply in this category. • Length of dresses, skirts, skorts, shorts (including any slit) should be no shorter than two inches above the top of the kneecap when the student is standing.
Inappropriate Attire … Hemlines more than two inches above top of kneecap Exposed Midriff
Shorts and skirts must be NO shorter than 2 inches above the top of the kneecap These are NOT acceptable.
Pants/Jeans/Shorts/Skirts/ Skorts/Sweatpants • Each of these articles of clothing shall be worn at the natural waist level. • No clothing that is to be worn as an UNDERGARMENT shall be visible while wearing pants, jeans, shorts, skirts, skorts, or sweatpants; standing or sitting. • Sweatpants may not be rolled down below the natural waist
Undergarments should NOT be visible. Pants must be pulled up and worn on the natural hip. Acceptable; As long as undergarments are not exposed when sitting or with arms raised Unacceptable
Torn Pants / Holes • Any pants/shorts/skirts with holes, tears, shreds above the knee ARE NOT PERMITTED. The picture on the right is unacceptable attire. On the left is acceptable.
OtherUnacceptableApparel: • Costumes, loungewear, pajamas or slippers. • Stretch lycra, spandex or nylon tights, leotards, biker pants or underwear worn as outer garments. • Head wear (except for religious reasons) to include, but not limited to, hats, hoods, wave-caps, sweatbands, bandannas, do-rags, skull caps, surgical caps, ear muffs, scarves, baseball caps, picks, rakes, and combs. • Sunglasses (prescription required)
Pajamas and slippers are not permitted to be worn in school.
Tights worn alone are unacceptable. Any garment worn over tights MUST be of appropriate length
Jogging, biker and Spandex shorts are also unacceptable; this includes PE class.
Inappropriate Headgear Ear Muffs Baseball caps Bandannas Scarves Surgical caps Skull caps Hoods Do-rags
Hoodies Hoodies are fine, however, students may NOT wear the hoods during school hours.
Sunglasses • Sunglasses may not be worn on the face, head or back of head.
Cont ... • Any article of clothing which displays obscene words, pictures or designs, any article which conveys a sexually suggestive, vulgar, demeaning or inflammatory remark, an alcohol related message, a tobacco and /or drug related message, or is symbolic of gangs or disruptive groups. • Dog collars, chains, wallet chains, safety pins, spike jewelry, or fishhooks worn as jewelry, accessories or ornamentation.
Cont … • Shoes MUST be worn at all times. Athletic shoes MUST be worn for physical education classes, and closed toed shoes are also required on lab days in science, technology, and family and consumer science classes. • ITEMS NOT SPECIFICALLY COVERED IN THE ABOVE POLICY CAN BE PROHIBITED AT THE DISCRETION OF THE ADMINISTRATION.
Consequences: Students who violate provisions of the dress code will not be allowed to attend class and will be given the opportunity to have a parent/guardian bring appropriate clothing to school. Continued violations of the dress code will subject the student to disciplinary action.
