DT Magnet Activities Overview FH
Magnet Activities in DT Three main activities • B-field measurements • M&O of LHC magnet Control Systems • General Magnet Support • Maintenance, Repair, consolidation of FT magnets • Displacement of magnets (dismantling, re-assembly…) • Stock of old magnets • Technical support for the construction of new magnets -> Aegis Felix B. Gert O.
Magnet Support Work In addition to the LHC magnets CERN has ≈ 38 experimental magnets The operation is mostly done by EN-MEF Most of the magnets are > 25 years old, and they are poorly documented. The repair and maintenance work relies on one or two experienced technicians; the people that were involved in the construction have allretired. In spite of a very valuable park of magnets, DT spends little (certainly too little) resources • To maintain the magnets in good conditions • To maintain the knowledge and expertise on the warm magnets Examples of recent Activities: • Repair of COMPASS Magnet (water leak) • Dismantling of NA60 Toroid Magnet • Dismantling of NA62 magnet -> re-assembly in autumn this year Since 2008 we are missing a magnet Engineer, since departure of M.L. Successors from W. Flegel
Fix Target Magnets NA62 Magnet NA60 Air Core Toroid Magnet
New Magnets AEGIS AEGIS Magnet design and construction: Diego P., Alexey D., Pierre-Ange G. and Francois G.
People Involved FSU: 6-8 People: 50% LHC magnet control 50% other activities
X-links with other Activities TOTEM / ATLAS Alfa motorization • Same people are involved in other activities: • ATLAS Alfa RP motorizations (8 RP set-up’s) • TOTEM RP motorizations (24 RP set-up’s) • CAST support • LCD studies • ArDM • Instrumentation support (e.g. for Irrad Fac.)
